Where Have My Tracks Gone ?

Fired up OpenCPN today and discovered that all the tracks have disappeared!

Can anyone help me find/restore them?

Which version are you using? You can find the tracks in a file named navobj.xml, which is located next to your logfile - to find the location of it, read "Location of Important Files. Log and config files." at the bottom of Installing OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage
If you installed 2.2.1111 beta and have non-ascii characters in the path to navobj.xml, you were hit by a bug which will be corrected in the next beta.

Using 2.1.0 build 624a June 2010.

Not sure if I can get 'behind the scenes' and if I did, how would I get it back into the open - I guess I am looking for quick fix that is idiot proof!

hmm, 2.1, then you are not hit by my latest error...
Locate navobj.xml and check what's in there or post the file so we can see.
If you tell me what operating system you use, I will try to tell you how to find the file if you don't know yourself.

Can't upload (or open) as XML file type. File size is only 684 bytes..... running XP on a netbook..... Tracks should cover more than 1000 miles at 0.1 mile intervals

Bad news...
To see the contents, right click the file, select Open with... and chose notepad to see the contents of the file.
But it's obvious that the tracks are gone if the file is this size. Hard to say what's up. Did you have a crash at the last run before the tracks disappeared? Can you post the log (opencpn.log) file? Just change the extension to .doc as the forum doesn't like most of the file types. Not that it will help to revive the tracks but maybe there's some clue what happened which could help us refine the logic in the new code introduced in the latest beta.

you also have to change the extension of .zip to .doc to attach it here - pretty weird this forum is in this respect...

Some help may be there, depending on your requirements for accuracy. For many purposes it is sufficient to reconstruct the track from LOGBOOK entries, written every 30 minutes. I made this feature precisely for such a situation. Some hand editing is needed and a simple tool exists for Python users, mentioned Forums - Post 530150">here .

as you posted I was already half done with hacking another tool doing the same Should be a bit more friendly to regular people as it features a "GUI".

there's not much to say... Got Ed's logfile which shows nothing of a value as for the cause of navobj.xml ending up empty.
At the time it happened there should have been tracks covering about 1000 miles, the longest collected over some 350 miles in 3 days while OpenCPN was running non-stop and exited cleanly.
The version used is 2.1.0-624a
What I did was hacking the forementioned little utility to extract the LOGBOOK entries from the logfile, creating a GPX file with one track per OpenCPN run recorded in the log.
I've sent you a couple of small patches for the issues discovered in the latest code while doing it.
