Very choppy after activating "Navigate To This "

I set up Open CPN for a friends boat. He is running 4.6 in Windows 10 on a brand new HP desktop using a Keyspan going to a Furuno GP-32 GPS. He said he loves the software but ran into one issue. When he right clicks on a point and the selects "Navigate to This", he can no longer scroll around on the map smoothly. Its very choppy when he drags the mouse anywhere else on the map to look at stuff. This only happens when he does this. The rest of time time, he can smoothly scroll around with no issues. I tried upgrading him to 4.8 today but it did not make any difference.

We are using the Noaa Raster Charts.

Any idea what the issue might be?

Thanks

Hmm...is "Auto Follow" turned on? Might be trying to pull the screen back to the position of the boat.

I don't think auto follow is turned on because he can scroll around, but its just very choppy and clunky. It freezes when moving the map around when this its activated. The rest of the time, he can scroll around fine.

That's interesting. Maybe take a look at the Windows Performance Monitor when he's doing that, to see if it's maxing out the system. https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10...indows-10.html

You might also try first disabling the charts all together and re-testing. If that fixes the problem, then you can reenable them and reduce the raster details under Preferences > Display > Advanced

If it isn't an issue related to system performance, then we've exceeded the scope of my knowledge.

For raster charts there is an option (Options->Display->Advanced->OpenGL->Options) of using a 'texture cache'. If this is activated raster charts are working much faster, however at first use they must be added to the cache.
By using the button 'Rebuild texture cache' all available rastercharts will be added to the cache. ( better have a cup of coffee at hand if you have a lot of charts)

I would try to Clear the cache first, so you are sure that there is a nice clean start, and then rebuild the cache

Thanks for the tips guys. I will give them a shot the next time I get down to the boat and report back.

Figured out the problem. I tried all the mentioned suggestions and they did not work.

In Options/Connections, the box was checked that says "Output this port (as autopilot or NMEA repeater).

Once I unchecked it, the issue went away.

Normally you need to output to the autopilot to command it. Should not slow the program significantly. Was it a tcp connection, or a serial port?

I have seen some problems with tcp connections when the other end isn't listening.

See this FAQ
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...north_up_modes

Were you in any of these modes?

Should we make a new FAQ?

Very Choppy Chart panning after "Navigate to Here"
Disable Options>Connections>"Output this port (as autopilot or NMEA repeater)". Once I unchecked the issue goes away.

It was set to output to a serial port. The boat currently does not have an autopilot hooked up to OpenCPN so I figured there was no reason to provide an output for it. Maybe that was causing the program to freeze up?

The owner did speak about wanting to hook his auto pilot up to it in the future though. Hopefully when its actually connected, this issue wont occur again.

Ok I will add it to the FAQ, as the other conditions for a jumpy chart apparently did not exist.

North up mode is on. I don't believe the others are though.
