How can I share a "Vector Palette" that I have made?

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

BuzziBi...
Yes, like this...
Few notes after a very brief glimpse at it:
  • Generally I don't like the fact you implemented the customizations of the point symbols in the simplified display style, which otherwise closely follows the S52 presentation library rules. Like it even less as just a small subset of the symbols were actually replaced. Why not just switch to Paper chart visualization if one does not like the simplified symbols?
  • BOYSAW now uses the white/red TOWERS symbol, which is unfortunate, BCNSPP visualization is at least weird, BOYSPP are not displayed at all in some cases (Look at the attached screenshots comparing your mods with the standard version in the SF Bay area, which generally is a very good testing ground for this stuff, both using CM93 and NOAA charts)
  • Soundings are smaller and at least for me less readable than the standard S52 ones we normally use (Not that they are perfect). The general solution for this probably is to use the vector ones from the new official S52 presentation library v4

The previous screenshots are from 2013-01 CM93v2, but it is not really important, the problems are universal. Attached the current NOAA ENCs example.

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

Whether one likes or dislikes the ENC (s57) standard, becomes a matter of taste in my opinion.
When I look at the map, I want to do a control, compared to what I see outside the window, not a lot of hieroglyphs on the map, that I'm not going to remember the meaning of.
I'll try to get new symbols on all buoys, and use the SF Bay area to, when I'm controlling.

Could not help but notice your comment for this about depths: "(Not that they are perfect)"
I began to examine whether I could make the depths clearer and larger.
Maybe someone wants a palette that only uses fresh look at depths.
Take a look at the picture. Here are just a the number 0 (zero) changed.
This time the SF Bay area

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

BuzziBi...
I must be missing something important here - If you don't like the "hieroglyphs" (Which people who have used professional ECDIS seem to love), why do you use the simplified style and not the paper chart one, where the symbols are understandable to users of conventional charts and IMO give you exactly what you talk about - when you see a buoy, there is a buoy out of the window, when you see a pylon, there is a pylon? Most of what you do seems to be to copy the buoy symbols from there to the simplified one anyway - If you started from paper chart style, the amount of changes needed and the chance you break something unintentionally, would be greatly decreased.
If you want to improve the soundings, the only way IMO is to use a vector representation of them and scaling, exactly as IHO did in the v4 PLIB, The potential of rasters, not making them enormously big, seems to be kind of exhausted. But of course you may surprise us.

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

Touché
Now I begin to understand what you mean!
Well, here's what happened.
When I started using OpenCPN, I used the ENC (s57) standard. After a while I tried the paper chart style. The symbols on the paper chart is what I wants, byt, there is a but. The symbols on the paper charts is also not corret. ie. a "cairn" is the symbol of a mix of a spar and a pillar. (and we have a lot of them where I live)
Therefor I started to find out how to change them. That I should have done this only on the paper chart style, and not the enc, actually never occurred to me.
I'll go back to the drawing board, and try to find out if I can do changes only on the paper chart style.

BuzziBi...
Before starting to invent new shapes for the existing wheels, Inland ECDIS Standard 2.3 | ienc.openecdis.org and especially the Encoding Guide is an interesting source of information...

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

nohal

I made an attempt to enlarge the soundings 2 pixels in height, and 1 pixel in width. And same time make them more highlighted. Do you have time to take a look. Great with your critical feedback!

The only thing that is changed in the original "chartsymbols.xml" & "rastersymbols-day.png", that was included with OpenCPN, are the soundings.
Now I am starting to read the "Encoding Guide for Inland ENCs".

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

BuzziBi
You are interested and working in an area where I hope there can be an improvement due to the fact my eyes are older. I will find a good dicussion thread from before, and pavel made a small change which helped, just as an example, but it was not a complete solution to the problem. I'll post a link here so you can see how things scale.

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

There is another thread which gets into more depth than this. I will try to find that too.

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

I've been re-reading it and it is all there in that thread. good dialogue.
Filed a Tracker request. Maybe you are onto something here, if you can solve it that would be great.
FS#1649 : Chart S-57 ENC CM93 Sounding Symbol set to stop growing at "Overzoom" warning

Re: VECTOR PALETTE

If you can't solve it, at least register on Tracker and VOTE for this request! That will help bring it to the front.
