Well, I'm using BlueNMEA from the Android market. Are you familiar with that? It allows you to share your gps via bluetooth with your laptop.

OK, thanks.

OpenCPN 2.5.0 is known NOT to work with Bluetooth.

However, the latest Beta (2.6.1215) theoretically should work with Bluetooth NMEA. Unfortunately, we have had limited testing opportunities so far.

You may wish to download the Beta and give it a try. Your results would be useful to the development team.

You may download the Beta from
http://opencpn.org/ocpn/downloads/be...1215_setup.exe

Thanks
Dave

Re: Using Blue NMEA for Android via bluetooth

Basically , you pair your phone w/ the computer

In device manager you'll then have the cell available (you can call the connection whatever you want)
Then start BlueNMEA
Click on the device under device manager.
Click services tab, you should see " Serial port (spp) BlueNMEA com (whatever, take note)
Open up OpenCPN , then ...
Should be able to point it to a com to listen.

Does the new version allow you to select a com port?

I'm more than willing to assist in any way I can. I'm not a programmer by any means though, but know my way around puters for the most part...

BTW, OpenCPN really does rock bro, great job!

I see a day when stand alone will be long forgot. Now all we need is open source radars?

Re: Using Blue NMEA for Android via bluetooth

Family...

Thanks for the +ve input. I really appreciate it.

2.6.1215 should show the BT COM port in the drop down list. When you select that port, it should, theoretically, just work.

So far, 2.6.1215 seems stable for normal operations, so I encourage you to give it a try. All your charts and settings will migrate transparently.

Are you running XP, or W7? What BT adapter setup do you have in the PC?

Thanks
Dave

Re: Using Blue NMEA for Android via bluetooth

This is kinda neat, but the way the BLUENMEA works, its the only app that can be opened. So no backup nav, or Facebook while using it with the computer. That $50 garmin is sounding good! ;-)

Re: Using Blue NMEA for Android via bluetooth

You probably know all this, but....

The BT Android is paired to a specific COM port on the PC.
That's the port which you should see in the OpenCPN drop down list.

As you said before:

Code:
In device manager you'll then have the cell available (you can call the connection whatever you want)
Then start BlueNMEA
Click on the device under device manager.
Click services tab, you should see " Serial port (spp) BlueNMEA com (whatever, take note)
Open up OpenCPN , then ...
Should be able to point it to a com to listen.
Can you pair with a port, and does the port appear in the OCPN list?

Dave

Re: Using Blue NMEA for Android via bluetooth

Several ideas:

You may try to manually type in COM10 into the drop down text box field

We once had a problem with COM ports above COM9.
Thought it was fixed.

Is it possible to move your BT COM port to say COM5?

Also, I think it may be necessary for the 'droid to be paired with the PC before starting OpenCPN.

Finally, so I can try to replicate the situation here:
Are you using Win7? What BT adapter? What BT drivers (if any) did you load?

Thanks for your patience
Dave

Re: Using Blue NMEA for Android via bluetooth

Hello,

I've been trying to get GPS from my Android phone into my Macbook running OS X 10.5.8 -- no luck yet with any of the Android apps or any of the PC apps including OpenCPN -- the fault usually comes down to "Unable to open RFComm port - check whether authentication is required on your device."

I will try again with the latest beta of OpenCPN and also with the BlueNMEA app, which I had not tried. But wondering if there is any success using OpenCPN on Mac with GPS via Bluetooth?

Thanks

nick

Re: Using Blue NMEA for Android via bluetooth

Not android but..
No go for bluetooth gps.On port 9.
I'm using my phone's "real"gps via bluetooth using a java app EXTGPS.then to a BlueSoleil dongle on XP_sp2.The gps shows in Bluesoleil as com port 9.
OpenCPN allows the port but shows no data.
the log says...
"9:23:27 AM: EnumerateSerialPorts() Found Garmin USB Driver.
9:23:36 AM: NMEA Data Source is....Serial:COM9
9:23:37 AM: OpenPD: 1764, new_count = 1 for COM9
9:23:39 AM: EnumerateSerialPorts() Found Garmin USB Driver."
the garmin driver is just dirt from my car gps update, but hasn't interfered before.(I think I'll scrub it out of this computer anyways)

But,it works when I use Xport as a middleman to emulate a port for openCPN....,it's not a great setup, maybe because I'm in a house, using a windowsill.

"9:31:48 AM: EnumerateSerialPorts() Found Garmin USB Driver.
9:32:04 AM: NMEA Data Source is....Serial:COM2
9:32:04 AM: OpenPD: 1728, new_count = 1 for COM2"
