Ubuntu Version gpsd Restart Daemon ?

I noticed that everything works on a boot up.
version ubuntu 11.04
the LT-20 usb device works and sends data to /dev/ttyUSB0
the gpsd daemon works and gets data and passes it on.
(had to configure it using sudo dpkg-reconfigure gpsd, because it did not just work off the bat)
But If I unplug the USB device and plug it back in, then /dev/USBtty0 works
and gpsd does not.
I thought gpsd was auto starting?

what is the terminal command to restart gpsd?
thanks
