Ubuntu and BU-353

Hi
I am trying to get a BU-353 GPS to work with OPNCPN under UBUNTU 14.0.0.
I have started xgps and I see a screen with the satellites used etc.
In OPNCPN I go to connections and there is no connection in the list.
There is no red boat on the chart.
WARNING I am new to UBUNTU and trying to learn.

Hi. Assuming you are using ubuntu 14.04 (14.0.0. dosen't exsist)

From the opencpn user manual:

To proceed, the "user" you use on your computer must belong to a group that is allowed to open serial connections. This group is normally "dialout" on Debian based Linuxes, including Ubuntu, and "uucp" on Red Hat based distributions. Read more in Data Connections.
Check your status by writing "groups" on a command line. The response will be all groups that the user belongs to. Make sure that "dialout" or "uucp" is included. If not, you have to add your user to this group. There are many ways to do this, one is to issue this command:

sudo usermod -a -G dialout $USER

"

• Install the gpsd and gpsd-clients packages
  • $

    sudo apt-get install gpsd gpsd-clients

• Go to Options-> Connections-> Add Conection and select "Network" plus the GPSD radio button. Address should be "localhost" and DataPorts should be set to 2947.
• On Ubuntu 10.04 and later, that is really all you have to do. When you plug in your gps this will trigger gpsd to start.
• "xgps" is client that comes with the gpsd-clients package, and is useful for testing that the gps and gpsd is working properly. If xgps isn't working, it's a gps or gpsd problem, not an OpenCPN problem

hm... interesting. As I plan a living + working on a boat in 2016 actually I think about such tasks.

In my office I run 50% on Ubuntu for now... but I like to get rid of Microsoft. I like to switch completly to Ubuntu. Made good experiences with.

My computer network and file server (already runs on Linux for backupping/data outsourcing) shall give me the option to get access to all boat datas via desktop solution on the screens, inclusive software for routing planning + weather navigation...

Actually I like the EDO Instruments "front end" for vessel monitoring (which I run as trial version for testing on a Microsoft mashine virtually with a simulation).

EDO realized the latest software version in May 2015... You can find the announcement on this FOrum, too.

I may address following question:
Which producers of Hardware components (Chart plotter, wind log, speedometer, fish finder/depth finder, GPS, radar) can be connected via interface (not urgently Edo Instruments) with Linux ?

Does it need a kind of hardware (physically interface), e.g. the DMK box ?

And has anybody here experiences with NKE + centralized vessel monitoring ? (NKE is seen often in France and on faster Trimarans.)
