Trouble getting opencpm to see any NMEA183 messages from Simrad NSS8

Hi all,

I have an NSS8 which is connected to a NMEA2000 network, but bridges and outputs everything on a NMEA183 port. I've connected the NMEA cable to a DB9 cable, but when I turn on the NMEA debugger in openCPN, I can't see any messages being received or sent.

Using a serial port monitor program I can see that messages are reaching my laptop (confirmed by turning off the serial port broadcast on the NSS8 - messages stop, when I turn it back on they start again) but nothing appears on the openCPN NMEA debugger.

Any ideas?

The output looks very raw. Maybe try some other receiver on the PC side see what ensues?

Like NavMonPC, eg.

Make sure all cabling serial to usb etc is fine. It is easy to mix up there.

This looks like SAE J1939 but not NMEA0183. You should be sure to have converted the data from your NSS8 to NMEA0183.

The NSS8 has a port that just outputs NMEA0183 - there is an option to output as either RS422 or RS232

pgs 31 and 32 here http://www.simrad-yachting.com/Root/...0107-001_w.pdf

I'm stumped! Could incorrect DB9 wiring cause this?

Re: Trouble getting opencpm to see any NMEA183 messages from Simrad NSS8

Figured it out, if anyone else is having a similar issue.

My NSS8 came with a seperate piece of paper, saying that the wiring in the manual is wrong and to use the one on the paper.... except it wasn't wrong.

Once i did the wiring according to the manual, not the errata, it worked fine.
