Trouble downloading openCPN on Ubuntu 14.04

Hello,

I was previously using OpenCPN and loving it until my OS died (typical windows) and rather then paying the outrageous amount to fix it I went with Ubuntu, reading that the program supports that OS.
I have now been trying to download the program for about a week, and have had no luck yet. I have been following the instructions given on this page
Configuring Ubuntu PPA | Official OpenCPN Homepage
to no avail.
Says connection error, check internet. I know the internet is fine where I am.

Any suggestions? I love the software, and would love to get it up and running again to use as I head south.

Thanks,

Andrew

Re: Trouble downloading openCPN on Ubuntu 14.04

Hi !
First you will have to ensure that Internet connection is working. Press Crtl+Alt+t to open a terminal window.
In the terminal window type:
Code:
ping 208.67.222.222
You shall ten ger something like this in yoyr terminal window:

PING 208.67.222.222 (208.67.222.222) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 208.67.222.222: icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=30.0 ms
64 bytes from 208.67.222.222: icmp_seq=2 ttl=52 time=30.0 ms
64 bytes from 208.67.222.222: icmp_seq=3 ttl=52 time=30.6 ms

then press Ctrl+c to stop. If you received something like above, we have tested that the Internet connection is working.

Then we want to test if the DNS lookup is working. In the terminal window, type:

Code:
ping ubuntu.com
then press Ctrl+c to stop. If you received something like:

PING ubuntu.com (91.189.94.40) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from ovinnik.canonical.com (91.189.94.40): icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=45.3 ms
64 bytes from ovinnik.canonical.com (91.189.94.40): icmp_seq=2 ttl=52 time=45.8 ms
64 bytes from ovinnik.canonical.com (91.189.94.40): icmp_seq=3 ttl=52 time=45.6 ms

we have tested that you have a fully working Internet connection.

When you have done the two above tests, post the output on the terminal window, And I will try to help you from there. /P

When updating in terminal I get this read out

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwibber-dai...-i386/Packages 404 Not Found

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

When doing it through applications program I get

ap.thoms...
Your problem is with some gwibber-daily PPA which has nothing to do with opencpn at all

Re: Trouble downloading openCPN on Ubuntu 14.04

As it obviously does not exist, just delete/disable it from your Software Sources (the same place where you are adding the OpenCPN PPA)

Re: Trouble downloading openCPN on Ubuntu 14.04

Ok, New problem.
Using a panasonic CF-30 and openCPN does not pick up the build in GPS unit. I tried typing the port into the connection area and such. Any suggestions?

Re: Trouble downloading openCPN on Ubuntu 14.04

Make sure you are in the dialout group and that you are not fighting for the HW with GPSd. You should find more info in Installing OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage, Data Connections | Official OpenCPN Homepage and Setting Up GPS | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Re: Trouble downloading openCPN on Ubuntu 14.04

Maybe go to a terminal and type
Code:
xgps
If you can see connection to a gps in the xgps window, I suggest to use gpsd as showed in attached image

Re: Trouble downloading openCPN on Ubuntu 14.04

Andrew...
Is there actually any application that can read the GPS? Any reason not to use gpsd? It is kind of the way to do it under Linux...

To be ure that things is installed, type in a terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get install gpsd gpsd-clients
Dos it seems that anything is installed, or does it say that everything already is installed??

unplug your gps and put it back.
in a terminal, now type
Code:
xgps
does it work now??
