Trip Log, Sum Log activate

New user of OpenCPN from polar. I cant seem to get trip log or sum log to show any activity. I was able to put them on dashboard along with other features, those two are the only ones not functioning. Recent download 4.8.2, recent plugins, Windows 10 on Surface Pro, using handheld gps to feed. Any Ideas. Thank You

The dashboard simply shows data received from your instruments, it does not calculate any values for you. In this case your handheld GPS probably does not produce such data.

For a long time asked that at least an odometer added that would count trips from a conventional GPS receiver.
It turns out that someone who does not measure the speed relative to water can not get Trip Log ((((

AA...
Just to complete others answer:
All data to Dashboard Trip and Sum_log instruments are read from the NMEA sentence: VLW. In my case it looks like this:
$IIVLW,2356.766,N,2340.382,N*44
My sentence originates from the on-board Simrad IS15 system.
So - You've to have some instrument feeding the NMEA --VLW. Check your instrument specification to find out. And a handheld GPS is probably not including that data.
Here's the VLW specification:

VLW - Distance Traveled through Water

1 2 3 4 5
| | | | |
$--VLW,x.x,N,x.x,N*hh<CR><LF>

Field Number:
1) Total cumulative distance
2) N = Nautical Miles
3) Distance since Reset
4) N = Nautical Miles
5) Checksum

Restrictions!
Miles but how about kilometers?
All calculations from water(((
The odometer should be considered and based on the usual GPS
So works in any chartplotter

Re: Trip Log, Sum Log activate

If this can work only if you have a GPS receiver, then it's great!

Re: Trip Log, Sum Log activate

Not very likely. Most GPS wont send --VLW. Some plotters and navigation system may.

most connect to CPN only USB GPS receiver. It is a pity that even a simple odometer is not!

Re: Trip Log, Sum Log activate

For a long time, the wish to add a regular odometer to CPN
Can someone take a dashboard for an ordinary odometer that works only from GPS readings with the option to reset the odometer?
