Have you checked out openplotter yet? Signalk does so much now with numerous plugins for a host of kit and functions.

I've gone on to using influxdb for logging and chronograph for plotting, easy to set p and signalk has a plugin to send data to influxdb.

Signalk is the future!! We hope.....

Just tried the OpenPlotter (Raspian/Debian Stretch) with the latest kernel version 4.14.72 and the OpenGL driver VC4 to on and also OpenGL setting in OpenCPN on.

System is now running for a test on board for allready 48 hours with AIS/GPS and a touch screen plus usb keyboard with a pad.

Screen is a watertight Faytech 10" daylicht touch screen.

Worked without any problems and with very fast screen movements.

Working with OpenGL is now almost perfect.

System is a RPI 3B+ in a Flirc alu case.

Re: The completely open plotter

Sounds like a worthwhile project, and a very challenging one, so a lot of fun if you like that sort of thing. Myself, I don't find the power consumption of my vintage Samsung Note 3 running OCPN to be a severe hardship, but I can appreciate the effort to go as low as possible, too.

BUT, I can play Kitten Cannon on my plotter. I find this to be an absolute necessity at sea.
