System Requirements

Hi Everybody,

I'm having trouble finding minimum system requirements for OpenCPN running on a PC. Assuming XP or Vista, is there a minimum recommended amount of RAM for running the app? I'm looking at mini notebooks and most are limited to 1GB of RAM. Thank you.

Pinch...

Welcome aboard!

I regularly run OpenCPN on linux and W98 or XP with:

1GHz i386 unicore processor
512MB RAM.
40 GB HDD.

These are my at sea "production" systems, optimized for low power. Fanless, to avoid salt accumulation.

No problems.

Of course, my development system is more capable....

Thanks for the question
Dave

GPS Receiver

Thanks Dave. Do you, or other members, have any experience using the Zenstar III GPS receiver (USB) with OpenCPN?

Thanks again, Jim

We did a test/exhibition of Opencpn in Navigatrix two nights ago. There was no problem. If the SUB port is swapped simply open the Tools menu and point the software to the new port (USB0, USB1, etc...)

Navigatrix is a lighter operating system than others so it doesn't need the grunt to make it fly, so it will work with older/slower machine just as long as it *has* a USP port and that port is bootable from the BIOS.

Check out http://www.wadda.org/navigatrix and give it a try.

Any feedback is appreciated.
