Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

I've disabled the default status bar and enabled the plugin (StatusBar 0.6). I go to preferences and try to make changes, say to font size or display string. I make my selections, click OK but nothing changes. I go back in to Preferences and the values have not changed.

Does anyone know ow to change the features of this plugin please?

Many thanks
Chris

Re: Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

Well I managed it by editing the relevant lines in opencpn.conf but that's not really the way it was intended to be changed.

The plugin is decrepit and does not work properly. A couple of months ago, I wrote to the author of the plugin about the problem. Although he did reply to my email, it now seems like he abandoned the plugin. It is a pity as I found it quite useful - especially so with my deteriorating eye sight.

Re: Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

I did not abandon the plugin, I cannot reproduce the problem mentioned, the plugin works for me.

I think it's a windows only problem? I will attempt a workaround...

Thank you for your reply and it is indeed good news that I was wrong in assuming you abandoned the plugin. Is there anything we can do to help getting this plugin to work again?

Re: Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

Thanks to both the respondents.

I am running the StatusBar plugin on a Raspberry Pi3, OpenCPN version 4.6.1.

If I select preferences for the plugin and try to make some changes and then click OK, the changes are not committed. If however I change the data directly in the opencpn.conf file then that works. I have the status bar configured as I wish and I really like it but I would prefer if the plugin could be customised via the "Preferences" button.

Thanks again

Re: Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

The problem is the only way to add the preferences without adding a toolbar or menu item, is through the plugin control panel. However this modal dialog blocks.

I want the preferences to get update while they are set rather than require the user to click ok, before the rendered status bar is visible. To do this, I hacked it to kill the great great grandparent of itself (main options window)
so that only preferences remain, and you can modify them and see the status bar.

but somehow this must be the problem? Can you use the preferences at all and change the settings losing them only if restarting opencpn?

Re: Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

The settings cannot be changed at all. If I go into preferences and make a change, press OK then go back immediately into preferences (no restart of OpenCPN) nothing has changed.

Sean, on Windows 10, I can change nothing. Color, pos, what is presented.

Hello Sean

You probably know what the problem is - but for clarity, perhaps this image will shed more light.

I doubt that it is a Windows thing. I used Windows 7 for the past 5 years and your Status Bar worked on all the previous OpenCPN versions I installed. However, it stopped working correctly only when I upgraded to the latest version of OpenCPN.

Re: Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

Old thread, but I hit this issue today and it took quite a while to find this thread and then to figure out how to change the preferences. So I'd thought I'd share.

For the latest version, opencpn 4.8.4, I could not find an opencpn.conf file.
But I was able to change these settings in opencpn.ini in C:/Program Data/opencpn.

But beware, it looks like opencpn overwrites this file when it exits. So you can't just keep it open in your editor and change things and start and stop opencpn to check changes. You have to make sure that you reload the file in the editor (or close and reopen it) after you exit opencpn.

The properties to change are in the [PlugIns/StatusBar] section of the file.

Re: Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

This was fixed in Windows with Statusbar 0.604.

The opencpn.ini file should only be edited and saved, when Opencpn is closed.

Re: Statusbar Plugin - how to configure?

Yes, this has been my problem for the last few weeks. Impossible to customize the status bar plugin. It returns to the default settings every time oCpn is relaunched. I have to go to settings, and then deactivate and reactivate the plugin - that makes all the changes reappear. So apparently they have to have been saved somewhere, but not activated on launching oCpn.
System Windows 10, oCpn 4.8.4, plugin ver. 0.604.
Best regards,
Christian

Ah ha. Sorry I did not understand. Thanks for including OS and version.
