Re: Shortcut Keys List

Bluegillboy suggested this Virtual Keyboard, which he finds very useful on tablets, uses the mouse to make selections.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Another Popup keyboard: https://github.com/Mottie/Keyboard
Examples: Virtual Keyboard
It just has a small entry area, when the mouse is moved into the field, the keyboard pops up.

Why couldn't we configure the keyboard specifically for Opencpn Commands?
Then we could have a command keyboard popup and a text entry keyboard popup?

The other alternative would be to make a popup keyboard or scroll list with just the commands that can be selected. Perhaps Opencpn has a short enough list of commands so that this would work? That would perhaps allow mnemonic descriptors for the commands on the keypad?

One thin about single key shortcuts that I hesitate about, relates to a situation Gille wrote about earlier....

Whenever his wife was using the program it would get changed, he finally realized that the reason was she would inadvertently hit a key that was causing the problem. So Gille asked that that key be turned into a two key combo. I believe the key was the space bar, and the problem was he kept getting MOB symbols all over and thought the program was making these automatically!

So you can see why I like the idea of a single key for all our main commands, but there are some who might find this to be a big problem. So how do we keep people happy?
That might suggest there should be NO single letter shortcuts,or ability to turn keyboard off. I expect that people that never use them must be really annoyed when an inadvertent object falling on a keyboard makes things happen.
But...[spacebar]=Overboard! is one I would see changed too. I accidentally hit it too often.
Suggest change to [o]='Overboard!" and make ALT [o] = chart outlines
(or CTRL if I'm alone per ALT/CTRL)..

A poll would suggest just which are "main" commands if enough people could be brought to participate. It might best be mounted in the Navigation thread rather than in here.
Ask who uses them (yes/no)on ANY navigation app and then, why not/ which shortcuts do they use? and then, what improvements would they would make? Something like that might get a large enough sample.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Happy...

The current system (with perhaps a couple of exceptions) is to use Ctrl for "creative" and "destructive" shortcuts (create route, waypoint, etc) and for shortcuts which hide or show bits of the UI, and plain letters for toggling options (quilting, colour scheme, ENC features, etc) and changing the view (zoom, pan, etc).

In most apps Ctrl is used for all shortcuts except pan/zoom.

Alt is not normally used as a key modifier for shortcuts without also using Ctrl.
On some platforms, such as OS X, Alt just changes the character produced by the key (eg, Alt-/ produces ¿ on my keyboard).

We no longer have F-keys as primary shortcuts - they all have non-F-key alternatives - but the old F-key shortcuts still work too.

The exceptions to the above are where there is a standard shortcut for a certain action on each platform. For example, fullscreen uses F11 on Windows and Linux, and Cmd-Ctrl-F on Mac, because these are the standard shortcuts so users are already familiar with them.

Gerhard, Gille,

Do you think we need to make the keyboard shortcuts translatable?
I personally prefer to avoid this as documentation is easier if shortcuts are always the same, but I can certainly see an argument in favour of localised shortcuts too.
What do you think?

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Mollymawk,You are right!

The MENU changes everything. Previously, in O, it was always (to me) an odd thing to be without one in Windows. It has been my assumption that O was off in a new and strange land for an unknown reason.
....proposing a new settlement where CTRL means control and ALT means "alternate" is merely a flight of fancy on my part.

But my now-microsoftened brain is quite happy to follow the OS . Some consistent pattern is a relief.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

add blather-I was reading through previous posts and see that where I first advocated two-handed shortcuts consistent with windows (except for Vector settings,) after an absence I advocate a system of single letter shortcuts. Because they do have the advantage for a single-hander (hanging on with the other hand) or a bird with a beak and offer an opportunity for a certain literacy too.

an analogy for a usr might be a bird-brain... seagulls can adapt, but certain signposts (to indicate a pattern) are required. IE: the eagle silhouette overhead provokes a response, The response can be modified for vultures, it is still in the overhead predator centre of the brain. Eeek! =eagle Alt+[E]= not eagle

But the ALT+eeek!,choose eagle! or vulture...is fine albeit a trifle slower.

Fair comment. I'm not against incorporating other languages as long as they don't include umhaults ,accents- characters I don't have on my keyboard.

Still, English is the present "lingua franca". (late 17th century: from Italian, literally 'Frankish tongue') This definition also recalls when Francais was the lingua franca while 2000 years ago, (and beyond the middle ages) Latin was the lingua franca.

....It's a stretch of (your?) argument but the chauvinistic? convention of "North Up" leaves the poor sods in Australia and South America with a perception of falling off the planet.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Hi,

To be compliant with the menu bar, "Ctrl ," has been added to the Keyboard shortcuts list in the beta user manuel.

"Ctrl Q" is missing in the menu bar

Re: Shortcut Keys List

I posted in

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1704930

Quote:
In shortcuts menu Keyboard Shortcuts | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Change Colour Scheme C (or F5) C C shortcut is new
Monochromatic Mode Ctrl-G Works on some Windows systems (depending on graphic driver)
and below that

Ctrl + C
Change color scheme - new similar to Ctrl+G, "C" and (F5)
Ctrl + G
* cycles through green, red and normal screen.

List sorted by keys

F5 toggle Daylight, Dusk & Night mode, if built into the Chart ( "C", Ctrl+C, Ctrl+G)
C change color scheme -new similar to Ctrl+C, Ctrl+G and F5
Ctrl + C
Change color scheme - new similar to Ctrl+G, "C" and (F5)
Ctrl + G
* cycles through green, red and normal screen.

In Windows these all seem to work except Ctrl G which the note says is because of graphics driver (but it seems to work with the other keys).
It seems to me that there is too much redundency here for the function, both for the programming and the multiple keys..
Which keys should we be using now to dim or change color ? "C" Ctrl+C and F5?

I think the previous Shortcut Keys list explains some of the intentions, lets keep those intention but make it clearer if possible.

Night Navigation
  • F6 General Dimming, of the entire Screen, in steps.
  • SHIFT + F6 reverses the dimming.
  • F5 Toggle Daylight, Dusk and Night mode, if it is built into the Chart.
  • Ctrl + G * cycles through (monochromatic) green, red and normal screen.∗
By the way the "F6" key brings up ten steps 1 ---> Max, but does not dim anything on my machine. Yet when I turn off Opengl it works. So we should note that F6 10 step dimming requires no opengl.
We are now at Opencpn 3.3.2430 release candidate and some of the above should be checked.

NOTE F6 Dim now works with both Opengl on and off! This dim feature actually dims the entire screen using the computers screen controls I think.

I am going to have to finish sorting through this later.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Night Navigation
using Windows 7

F6, F6+Shift with and without Opengl.
to Dim entire screen in 10 steps.
There is currently no shortcut key for "F6" and "D" is used for Detail toggle.

F5 and "C" work with and without Opengl to
Toggle Daylight, Dusk and Night mode, if it is built into the Chart.
Ctrl+G does not work for my Win7, dependent on graphics board I believe.
Ctrl+C does not work for my Win7.

I think we need to eliminate the reference to Opengl in F6 as it now works.
Are there other changes to shortcuts wiki?
Keyboard Shortcuts | Official OpenCPN Homepage

The other keys like M and Ctrl-R seem to work fine.
