Re: Shortcut Keys List

Does anyone know if the Function keys are operational for Linux too?
I believe Mac OS X does not support function keys.

Rick,

all but F6/screen dimming - as documented.
Most probably you had this in mind (don't worry, brain is still working )

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Thanks Hakan, Hubert and Gerhard. So I can just copy the Function keys (as is) to the bottom of the page Caesar added to. Which I will do now.

PS: I went back to edit F6 to indicate (not on Mac OS X) and the List disappeared, so I backedup. This will have to be added later.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

I've tried to add F keys to the new Table and also copy and paste the List sorted by Keys, then add missing shortcuts and complete the indications for F keys.

I am sure there is more to do, and we should be testing the keys in the table and the List sorted by Keys and correct and update.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

We need to add this shortcut to the manual:

Alt = Toggle top menu bar on and off.

OS X Shortcut standard OS X fullscreen shortcut is Ctrl+Cmd+F.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

There has been a demand for setting shortcuts by the user.
A smart OS does just this with its own preferences.
In the picture below some settings are done in Mac OS X with its own system preferences for the menu bar of OpenCPN in german language.
May be there are tools available for other OS like Windows or Linux which can do that also.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Follows a rant but apart from the option to set them up myself, I'm getting more muddled reading this and not less.
Maybe there should be a poll of users.

What Shortcuts Do You Use?
The ones that get most used or are most wanted most should be simplest. Then try to make these as consistent/easy/intuitive as possible across operating systems.

Rant:
[r] for route. Not CTRL+r
Note that CTRL stands for Control. Where would One would expect a "control"? I'd say, usually on incremental stuff. zoom, dimming, rotating, panning
Note that ALT stands for Alternate. as in two intuitive demands on a letter..the least-used gets the two-handed ALT condition..say between two demands on D...VectorDetail or Dimming Well, Hands up? Who needs a detail slider for charts as a shortcut? and who Who dims their screen at night? I'd hazard that ALT D is for VectorDetail..
Two handed shortcuts are awkward. so NOT useful for "commonly used" switches or toggles whichever these are deemed to be. Switching charts doesn't need fine control. It just needs toggling through...after all, screen brightness toggles, why not charts?
so,
Arrowkeys should only be used for panning and CTRL+ arrow should be control-pan, not choosing a chart.

ESC should not be used to exit route pencil. just toggle r
because, Escape = Cancel

..because I know O has keyboard shortcuts but can't possibly remember them all, I will maybe just tap the "best chance"letter to find them. Quilting? tap Q. Zoom? tap+. Dim=D? or N night or F for fade or S for screen
Yes,There'd as above there'd be conflicts: D for VectorDetail Or Dim Screen? ..but ...really- how many people need a shortcut for vector chart detail????? while dimming screen is pretty useful at night .

(sub-rant: and Strange that such an important setting on a boat can only be accessed by keyboard ! while Vector Detail has a special box)

And Function keys are a pain. They are pretty small versus letters and F6 says nothing to me about dimming or brightness or screen I hit the ones next to it in error too often.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Happy, I am sure we all could rant about shortcuts.. perhaps Sean's idea of developing

User configurable Shortcuts would be ideal, because through use and gradual changes, users will find and share configurations, much of it will become the same or similar between users, however some shortcuts will be individual.

The alternative is to hash through endless suggestions and arguments about what is best and settle on the changes. Try to get 50 people to agree about something they are passionate about....that's us!

The other thing that might help us all is a Shortcut Help Icon that brings up a list of shortcuts, as the gray matter needs help sometimes.

I certainly agree that hitting the Route pencil shortcut twice to turn it off would be good.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

sorry,of course...... it's not as though I'm going to night-school to become a programmer to help. .. it's much Much easier to tell everybody else what to do.

A configurator plugin would be dynamite.

I think that could be done now with the Launcher plugin, but it's not so much an issue of forgetting or discovering as it is finding them easily. Mnemonic design is what I'm whining about.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

We agree about Mnemonic Design. We probably both should "go to night-school" to help..

One thin about single key shortcuts that I hesitate about, relates to a situation Gille wrote about earlier....

Whenever his wife was using the program it would get changed, he finally realized that the reason was she would inadvertently hit a key that was causing the problem. So Gille asked that that key be turned into a two key combo. I believe the key was the space bar, and the problem was he kept getting MOB symbols all over and thought the program was making these automatically!

So you can see why I like the idea of a single key for all our main commands, but there are some who might find this to be a big problem. So how do we keep people happy?
