I meant Oceandots.com which is now defunct. It was a site that had individual pages for individual islands around the world. It was mainly devoted to describing each islands geological origins and subsequent geological timeline. What it was really great for was high res photography of each island. Sadly, it is no more though.

The internet does not forget

Try this "backup" on archive.org:

oceandots.com

Jim, thanks for the lead, I didn't know about this site!

Re: Sharing kap Files made from GE into OpenCpn

I am so glad I found this thread. I'm in Hualtulco, MX right now, getting ready to head south to Panama, and have discovered that the paper charts I had have vanished utterly. So I'm semi-frantically trying to figure out how to make do. I have OpenCPN, and I have the NOAA ENC charts working beautifully, but of course, those don't cover the area I need. I tried following the instructions here: How to make Charts from Google Earth Images and the charts I make aren't showing up in OpenCPN at all, so I'm kind of back to square one. I guess doing the phiggins protocol is my next step, unless someone on this thread has the images of this route already...?

TIA!

Hey Surveyor-

I completely understand the concern about becoming a target!

One way around this is to not share the Google Earth charts, but to share the .KMZ file they were derived from. The .KMZ has no licensing restrictions and file can be distributed without issue and people can use them as they see fit.

The creation of the KMZ file is really the hard work, as you can then plug it into GE2KAP and the rest is basically automated.

Any chance of sharing your file? I am currently at work creating KMZ files for the eastern seaboard of the US and would be happy to share.

Cheers-

Matt

Had a look at Oceansdot.com at Archive.org and it occurred to me that perhaps all you need to keep in repository is a database of where everything else is visually presented in a clickable map, example : International Map of the World - Perry-Castañeda Map Collection - UT Library Online
Members kaps can left just where they are, fileshare, dropbox, etc. We need the links. Come to think of it, GE kmz can be used to distribute the links making GE the 'clickable map'.

Try this : GEKap KMZ Links.kmz as a test case to get SeafloorMersing.png

Just birthing an idea, my 2 cents worth.
