Setting GPS Baud Rate in OpenCpn: Irrelevant ?

This may be a stupid remark, but I have noticed that setting baud rate in Toolbox / GPS seems irrelevant.

Xport says I am receiving at 9600 bauds, and the data stream window shows a data stream at 9600, 4800 (see pic) and 38400 (see pic) (Closing and reopening OpenCpn after clicking OK just to make sure the baud rate change has registered)

My config is
Haicom HI-204III-USB
Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm port (set to 9600, FWIW)
Original stream on COM4 routed to COM11 by Xport

Re: Setting GPS Baud Rate in OpenCpn: Irrelevant ?

SailorF54.....

XPort, and other port virtualizers, don't care about baud rate on their client side.

In this case the connection OCPN<->Xport is virtual (no wires), so baud rate is irrelevant.

Of course, XPorts input side, connected to the GPS receiver, must be properly configured. 9600 baud in this case.

When OCPN is connected directly to a GPS receiver, baud rate certainly matters. 4800 is normal for most GPS receivers, 38K is normal for AIS receivers, and 9600 is sometimes seen for GPS receivers.....

Hope this helps
Thanks
Dave
