set up GPS with Windows 10 and Opencpn

I just installed Opencpnversion 4 on a Windows 10 laptop. I'm trying to configure the port for GPS but in device manager there is no Port (COM & LPT) listed. does anyone know how to configure this with Windows 10?

thanks

There have been a few W10 discussions here recently. Have you considered using the search feature, and the "better" Google search?

mewstone..
Have you tried to follow the wiki?
Setting Up GPS | Official OpenCPN Homepage
What's said there is also valid for Win10. If that not help you out please revert her with more details about what type of GPS you are using etcetera.

yes I followed that and I've done it quite a few times before with no problem with earlier Windows versions. The point is that with Windows 10 Ports isn't listed at all in device manager so I cant configure it. I'll have a look at previous posts to see if anyone else has posted on this.

mewstone--
Ok, I use several serial-USB converters on Win10 without your troubles.
When you connect the USB is it not shown in the device manager at all? You say it's not shown as a Port but further up in the Manager list then? Nothing there with a question mark?

Try installing the driver first, before plugging in the GPS.

Since Win8, some GPS sensors have drivers not creating the virtual COM ports. In case your GPS is one of them, refer to GPS Geolocation for Win8 GNSS Sensor | Official OpenCPN Homepage
If unsure, post screenshot of your device manager window showing the GPS.

I've found that a lot of laptops default is to let USB ports and BlueTooth power down after not being accessed for an unknown period of time. There's a checkbox under Power Management.
