Send to GPS waypoint name truncated

I have built a bluetooth enabled gadget that acts as an interface between OpenCPN on my Mac and the NMEA2000 network on my boat. One of the (many) things that it does is listen for waypoints and routes sent from OpenCPN via the "Send to GPS" function and then publishes these waypoints and routes on the NMEA 2000 network. I haven't yet tested that they transfer and store on my chart plotter (Zeus2), but the waypoint names are displayed on my Triton MFDs, so I am hopeful.

My question is, the waypoint names are truncated to 6 characters, and route names are truncated to 9 characters. Is there a reason for this, and would it be possible to have the maximum length user definable in options window?

Thanks in advance.

adwuk...
The reason is that way too many devices are simply unable to handle names longer than that.
Feel free to fill a feature request at OpenCPN::OpenCPNAll Projects: Tasklist to make it configurable (and better make sure that your equipment actually does not have problems with longer names)

Re: Send to GPS waypoint name truncated

Thanks Pavel. I guess that 6 characters makes sense for GPS devices from the 1990s. I think that my old Garmin handheld GPS is a perfect example. Most modern devices can handle many more characters, and waypoint names are more meaningful as a result.

I tried to register on the flyspray site, but haven't got my registration code yet. In the short term I'll have a go at recompiling the code with a simple modification.

Re: Send to GPS waypoint name truncated

I have fully tested with the bluetooth to NMEA2000 gateway device that I have built, and waypoint names of up to 20 characters are accepted when transmitted onto the network via the Send to GPS function. It works well, and is a great way of transferring waypoints from OpenCPN to a NMEA 2000 chart plotter. I posted the proposed (minor) changes onto github, so hopefully they will be rolled into a future release at some stage.
