s63 charts woe after upgrade

- Opencpn worked faultlessly for several years in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (long term stable), very happy with it, so made big investment in s63 charts.
- Then did routine bare metal upgrade of o/s on same computer to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (newest long term stable)
- Did a new install via .ppa of Opencpn 4.4.0 build 2016.5.31, s63 plugin 1.4 ; went off without error, drama
- made no changes to vanilla install
- used chartloader to bring in all US s57 charts. All fine and usable.
- s63: first obtained new permits, installed them - both 'test ok'
imported all my s63 charts, updated cell permits, scan & rebuild
- verified chart files physically in place

Result:
- when exit & re-enter opencpn, all charts are there in outline, s57 and s63
- only the s57 functions; zoom in on the s63 outline and there is no response, no detail, blank
- only one error message in log:

08:48:51 BST: Chart cache purge
08:48:51 BST: Initializing Chart /home/jules/.opencpn/s63/s63charts/49/9C301267.os63
08:48:51 BST: OpenChartFromStack...Error opening chart /home/jules/.opencpn/s63/s63charts/49/9C301267.os63... return code 2
08:48:52 BST: ***GPS Watchdog timeout at Lat:46.3751 Lon: -8.5318
08:48:52 BST: Initializing Chart /home/jules/.opencpn/s63/s63charts/49/9C301267.os63
08:48:52 BST: OpenChartFromStack...Error opening chart /home/jules/.opencpn/s63/s63charts/49/9C301267.os63... return code 2
etc

Tried:
- scanned/rebuilt database (=no change)
- re-installing the s63 charts (=no change)
- re-installed completely opencpn (=no change)
- shrieked (=brought wife running)

Is there anything....?

Re: s63 charts woe after upgrade

First most probably it would not have been required to generate a new InstallPermit. Have not tested an upgrade of Ubuntu though..

When upgrading from OCPN 4.0 to 4.2 or 4.4 the existing S-63 permits are imported.

Are there any error messages when installing the S-63 cell permits and charts?

What you might try is to purge the existing S-63 database and files (the S63charts and S63SENC directories, rebuilt the chart data base and install the charts again.

Remember that the directory you install the charts from have to be present when running OCPN. So don't install from an removable media if this is not present while running the program.

I'm windows, but do you find an s57 directory? I've had similar happen during development, did not copy right files. I believe it can be fixed.

Re: s63 charts woe after upgrade

Tried the rebuild: renamed them both to prefix OLD, then ran the rebuild.
Result is I've lost the s63 outlines but the log shows no errors. Not looking in the right place for .os63? The chart file directories are correct as files are stored on this computer.
Then tried to copy contents of hidden (.opencpn/s63) files to the first named of two (not hidden) and rebuilt. Log gives new error:

T: Searching directory: /home/jules/Data/Charts for *.os63
11:37:53 BST: Loading chart data for /home/jules/Data/Charts/s63/49/9C40242C.os63
11:37:53 BST: ...initialization failed for /home/jules/Data/Charts/s63/49/9C40242C.os63
11:37:53 BST: CreateChartTableEntry() failed for file: /home/jules/Data/Charts/s63/49/9C40242C.os63
11:37:53 BST: Loading chart data for /home/jules/Data/Charts/s63/49/9C50302B.os63
11:37:53 BST: ...initialization failed for /home/jules/Data/Charts/s63/49/9C50302B.os63
11:37:53 BST: CreateChartTableEntry() failed for file: /home/jules/Data/Charts/s63/49/9C50302B.os63
etc

This is not an upgrade - it is a full fat PC, and the computer has a fresh bare metal install of the o/s. Likewise Opencpn, install from scratch, no tweaks/settings over default.

Re: s63 charts woe after upgrade

In answer to you, Rglreason, I find the s57 charts as .s57 all in the /SENC folder with the .bmp ones, not in a separate directory. They work fine like this for me, including in my present non-s63 setup!

Re: s63 charts woe after upgrade

BigJules..

can you please attach your ocpn log file (renaming perhaps to .doc due to size restrictions)?
And please check if both the system and the plug-in are 64/64bit or 32/32bit.

Re: s63 charts woe after upgrade

Not sure how I can check for sure - the Ubuntu system certainly is 64bit. The synaptic program where I got Opencpn after the .ppa reports:
4.4.0--0-xenial, the program itself additionally Build 2016-05-31
The plugin likewise, synaptic reports:
1.4.10-0-xenial
I would say that as the ppa would pick up the correct package for the system.

Not the first one not finding it:

"reply", at the editing window the paper clip from the tools, which opens a secondary window, select file and upload (the upload button is to the right, sometimes hidden). Submit reply.
As you are new at the forum it might take some time before the attachment appears...

Re: s63 charts woe after upgrade

Looks that there are no S63 charts in the area you are looking at. Should they?

When installingS63 sets and you have updates as well, remember that the data are incremental: first the basic set with perhaps some updates until the date of emission and then the update sets in the correct order. If you miss the first step and install just the latest update, this will fail.

Do you have still the ocpn log when installing the charts? The one you did upload is just from the last run, so we suspect that it did rotate just before. Possibly being an indicator of having a lot of (failure) messages.

Re: s63 charts woe after upgrade

Do have a log.log but by now not sure if that was the one on installing the charts. Attached but with extension .ogg to get it past the size police.

Note that after installing, I get the outline but when I zoom in there's no detail. I installed the base charts, saw them do the cell stuff and so forth, didn't see any messages beyond the ones quoted in the opening of this thread and later, after trying to get a rebuild, the other error. I havent touched the updates.

If nec, I can reinstall one base .s63, say the Europe one and let you have the log of this action? Should I delete the physical files in the s63 directory and rebuild before I do it?
