Hi Eloi,

not so easy: you have to give guarantees that there is never at no given moment an open copy of the cells/charts that might possibly be "kidnapped" - so rendering of the encryted data (this implies the decryting, in this instant you are working with the S-57 format) has to be inaccessable.
This also the way the BSB and NV plug-ins are working.

The "fingerprint" of the machine, HW_ID called in the S-63 context, the cell/chart is running at has to be kept secret as well.
Hardware dongles in the form of USB-sticks or DVDs as a dongle are discarted as it is a nightmare to distribute stuff like this world-wide.
So we will use a software solution as well.

There are still some challenges to make this working on the "zoo" of all the (un)imagenable hard- and software combinations we have in the user community. That's a point where we will need some broad beta testing - no charts yet - in the near future to ensure that we have stable solutions.

Herbert Thankyou for taking this on. It will be very welcome and a very important development. How much do you think encryption will slow up the program?

Also to others, the beginning early posts of this thread are fascinating, explain many questions about why and where this development is, and are an excellent example if the can do attitude in this community. Thankyou again.

Re: S-63 plug-in for OpenCPN

Yes, we are making progress. But take into account that this is not a simple task.
The technical framwork is well advanced, but there is still a lot of work to do in order to integrate well into O and to put the administrative stuff in place.

We hope to start some testing here - not yet with charts - before the end of the year. This will include information about the plug-in and the process.

So stay tuned.....

Re: S-63 plug-in for OpenCPN

I can help test plugin on win and Linux, can also compile both if needed. I think you may need some dummy testing charts. Is that possible?

Testing with charts is still a bit early. We will need to have to take some more steps before. Stand-by for announcements

Re: S-63 plug-in for OpenCPN

Our web site for the OpenCPN S-63 plug-in is now online.

o-charts.org

It will change over the next time. We are now

Preparing the S-63 plug-in

Test phase I
- Fingerprinting
- Translation of "S-63 plug-in explained"

S-63 implies a DRM scheme: the charts are licensed for an individual PC.
This can be done using Hardware- or Software-dongles.
OpenCPN uses a soft dongle: a fingerprint for the PC has to be created.

We need to test the implementation.
Please download the version for your OS (Linux, OS-X, Windows), run it and
send the resulting file by mail back to us (info at o-charts.org) including a short description the system (HW/OS version).

We need as many as possible and as different as possible fingerprints - and important: as well from "exotic" platforms like tablets or raspberries.
You will find additional information in the "S-63 plug-in explained" document.
This document describes the situation in the future, once the plug-in launched.

Translators: please use the English odt version of the document.

Happy testing!
