Routing

Hello,
i'm quite a new user of OC but want to know is it hard to make such an option. I'm let's say in a point A (for ex. hamburg , germany) and want to sail to point B (Rotterdam, holland). To just wrote those two place and route will prepare themself using all inland canals ?

I think that would be very hard... creating a route by road or an optimized route using qtVlm is another thing.

Here is an optimized route created by qtVlm taking into consideration both wind and tidal streams and imported yo OpenCPN.

You might also be lucky to find a .gpx file of a past trip through the canals which you can import to OpenCPN

There is special software for inland waterways which does that. E.g. PC-Navigo.
Not exactly free.

Many thanks sinbad7 for that informations. It's very helpfull. actully with this item routing is much more easy. Once again i want to thank you.

I've used to use pc navigo some time ago but to be honest for me this not as best as it cost. For me spend 400 EUR for soft which actually is pretty much the same as OPENCPN is not a good deal. But in that program is an option like "were to go" and i need just enter the name of city, harbour etc. and it make road automatically .

For me if opencpn got such an option, it wil be the best navigation program ever !

Sinbad7 How do you get tide in qtVlm? Don't see it in Grib files. Is it something you can turn on and off somewhere in a settings file? Thanks.

Presently there are few sources of grib tidal information.
They tend to be very local.

However,here is an excellent link covering most of Northern Europe
ftp://ftp.bsh.de/Stroemungsvorhersagen/

Here you can collect daily forecasts in grib format.
Just place them in the grib directory of qtVlm for later selection
from the qtVlm menu. Load up the wind gribs first,
then mark the area for tidal information and load up the tidal grib file.

I think I saw one also for Delaware area..

Hi Tore,
I tried to follow your instructions, but routing only works with the windgribs. I think the tidalgribs can only be displayed but are not included in routing algotithmus. Or am i doing something wrong?

Currents (tidalgribs as you call it), are taken into consideration and impact both apparent wind and boat's course if they are loaded in qtVlm. All you have to to is to load a wind grib in the first grib slot (grib->open, or grib->download), and then open a currents grib in the second slot (grib-<open a currents-grib). If you wind grib also contains currents data it's ok too, but I have never seen one containing both, hence the need to load 2 different gribs. Of course the dates and zone covered by your currents-grib must be compatible with your routing, i.e. not necessarily completely identical to the wind-grib, but if qtVlm asks for currents data in a place or time not covered by the currents-grib, it will assume there is no currents there

Thanks for your additional tip. I have not seen the point "ouvrir un GRIB Courants" . Now it works perfect.
Ps i have set the program to english but this menu point is still in french
