Re: Route Planning with GRIB - Work in Progress

Hello

With W XP, OpenCPN 250-1026

Is good. PjotrC thank you!

But to tell the truth, I do not know how I can use cete tool.

The main reason being that I do not have polar my boat. Obviously I will try to find them. That said, it crossed my mind that the use of data recorded with the VDR plug-in should allow one day to build on their use.

But back to your tool.

I tested with the PC I use to board my boat. ASUS 1001HA Netbook is one with a 10 inch screen only.

Now the properties window of the route is very large and occupies most of the screen. By clicking on a WP in this window, the map is automatically positioned so that the WP is in the center of the screen. So it's hidden ... We must constantly shift the screen manually. It's boring.

May be the use of a minimized window properties of the route would be suitable. But it may be to ask too much work.

Best regards

Gilletarom.

Re: Route Planning with GRIB - Work in Progress

Hi Gilletarom

One way to get approximate values for polars is the following.
Many hundreds of boats have been given ratings by the French Sailing Federation (FFV) (so called table H108/109).
CONSULTATION DES TABLES HN H108 et H109

Boats with the same rating are supposed to perform similarly in regattas
A Challenger Bravo belongs to class 11.0 with about 40 other boats

In this list, you find the First 210 QR
and fortunately, an ORC certificate for this boat is available here
Federation Francaise de Voile
(select year 2009)

Obviously, the values are only approximate, but they give a first-order approximation

I have written guidelines on how to use these polar values with the Bluewater Racing program (in French unfortunateley) here

Hisse Et Oh - Equipements : Créer un fichier de polaires pour Bluewater Racing

1°) Sorry to pollute the thread with my boat storie.
2°) Thank Sailor54
3°) Failing to have the values corresponding to truly my boat, I will follow this method.
4°) With only a bidata on the boat, you can not use records or traces of VDR plug-in (wind direction and strength, actual speed). It will be necessary that I study this more closely.

Re: Route Planning with GRIB - Work in Progress

Anybody ever tried PredictWind.com - The World Leader - Login ?
They offer a free service and a more detailed but costly professional service.
Even for the free service you get a GPX file also for your planned route calculated with the predicted winds in the given time.

I am afraid this service makes the work of PjotrC obsolet.

Make your route entries in the form, hit "Go!" and scroll down the resulting list to buttons "Export PWGFS as GPX" or "Export PWCMC as GPX".

Re: Route Planning with GRIB - Work in Progress

A new Windows build uploaded to opencpn_2.5.1101_setup.exe - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download . Parallel install and no other plugins, pls.

The reason for posting is mostly to allow Jon trying out the Track To Route function, which is included (along with FS#635, FS#633, FS#634).

But also some fixes for GRIB Planning:

- allow GRIBs with sparse wind data (i.e. wind data not in every record)
- allow synchronized browsing of GRIBs with dates not within the current year
- disable waypoint reuse when AppendingToRoute with a PolarSelection active

I tested now with GRIBS from

- Ugrib.us (my main and usual source)
- saildocs.com
- zyGrib
- Raymarine Raytech

Fair winds,

Piotr

Re: Route Planning with GRIB - Work in Progress

hello,

I am using the last version 2.5.1101.

It seem that it work correctly.

I take this post to say how it is impractical to use in the display with small screens (eg ASUS Netbook HA 1001, 10 inches)

Indeed, the route properties window is a big part of the screen. It is impossible to reduce the width of this window. Thus, it is not easy to see the road and see the polar boat when moving a waypoint from a route.

See screen copy.

There should be a route properties window much smaller. For example, displaying only the columns showing the speed and time of arrival.

Best regards

Gilletarom.

I totally with the comments on usage with a small screen. In fact I had prepared screen shots to illustrate. The display in my nav station is a ten inch touch screen and with that it was not practical to use the route planning functionality. The same issue applies to the GRIB viewer window which needs a compact version only showing a drop down selection box for each GRIB time, fwd and back buttons and a goto current time button. GRIB info should appear over the cursor I.e wind speed and direction and pressure so that there is no need to clutter screen real estate with a large open window.

Just used OpenCPN as primary charting tool on a trip from Uruguay to the Falklands and will post feedback in another thread.
