Raster charts not displaying properly with Open GL enabled

I have OpenCPN 4.84 installed on a friends Windows 10 Dell Optiplex PC on his boat. Has been working fine for 6 months and he called me today saying his NOAA Raster charts and track lines no longer display properly so I went down to check it out.

With Open GL enabled, his track lines don't show up and when he zooms in and out on his raster charts, they dont display correctly. They show squares instead as shown below:

Once I unchecked the box for OPEN GL, everything worked fine aside from being slower and choppy, typical behavior when it's not enabled. I then enabled it again, and tried clearing and rebuilding the texture cache. This did not fix the problem. I then tried updating OpenCPN to 4.8.8. This did not fix it either. I then made sure the PC was using the latest video card driver, which it was, but i went ahead and reinstalled it again anyway. I then updated the bios which was out of date and checked everything else and it was all current. I then tried to scan charts and updated database as well as forcing a full database rebuild. Everything I tried did not work. Same issue with missing track lines and the squares when zooming with open GL enabled.

He does have alot of waypoints but I dont think that would cause this as his database works fine on my computer at home with Open GL Enabled and using the exact same charts.

Like I said, everything worked fine on this computer for 6 months prior to this happening. I checked the device manager and windows event logs. All looks good.

Below is his log file. I also have a copy of his opencpn.ini if anyone wants to see that.

Re: Raster charts not displaying properly with Open GL enabled

You might try the beta 4.99 in parallel.

This problem happened in 4.84 and now in 4.88.

Was there something fixed in 4.99 to correct this?

Re: Raster charts not displaying properly with Open GL enabled

j805...

Nothing specific regarding this fault was added to O5 Beta.

Clearly, something about the OpenGL configuration of this device has changed, either by OS glitch, or driver updates.

Please try the following, in order:

1.Settings->Display->Advanced->GL options->Disable Texture Compression with Caching.

if that works, then try

2. Settings->Display->Advanced->GL options->Clear Texture Cache

and then:

3. Settings->Display->Advanced->GL options->Enable Texture Compression with Caching.

Step (3) will restore the performance lost by disabling the cache in step (1).

Please let us know how this goes.

Thanks for the reply Dave. I believe I have tried these steps. If the Open GL box is checked, I get the squares, regardless of what other options are set or not set. I will confirm this though tomorrow just to be sure and let you know.

Thanks

Re: Raster charts not displaying properly with Open GL enabled

Try Reloading the graphics card drivers. Maybe update them, but maybe not if it is an old card.

Would be interesting to know if the problem is solved by installing linux on the same machine.

Hi Dave,

I got back down to the boat yesterday. Once the Open GL checkbox was ticked, I got the square boxes instead of charts when zooming in and out. Also my track lines no longer showed up.

It did not matter even I unchecked the box for Texture Compression with Caching. I also tried clearing the texture cache, no change.

I then tried deleting all the charts and reinstalling them, no change.

Per rgleason's suggestion, I also deleted the video card and reinstalled with latest driver available from Dell.

I snapped this pic from the video card software properties. It appears that Open GL is loaded and working? My windows event log is clean.

One thing I noticed, when I checked Intel's site, there are much newer driver versions available that are not shown on Dell's site for this system.

I'm currently running driver: 23.20.16.4849

I'm going to try and install one of these newer versions:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/pro...D-Graphics-630

The latest non-beta they are showing for Win 10 is 25.20.100.6519 released 1/17/1019

Re: Raster charts not displaying properly with Open GL enabled

J805
I have Inspiron XPS 15 L502.
It has an Nvidia Geforce 540M, a second graphics adapter card installed (easily accessible).
I have had to install new drivers for Win10 and the Nvidia from their website abandoning the Dell drivers due to changes in Win10 that made that graphics card crash frequently.

Also I have now installed Intel's driver checking program and updated all intel software & drivers, including HD Graphics 3000, also abandoning the Dell drivers which are no longer being updated.

Your mileage may vary, no promises here.

Re: Raster charts not displaying properly with Open GL enabled

Just a heads up, the problem is now fixed.

I tried downloading the latest driver from Intel and loading it. The OS said it was incompatible. I then uninstalled the latest driver that I had running, which I loaded from Dell's site, and rebooted. The driver which comes with Windows was then loaded automatically when it discovered new hardware. It was the correct driver but just an older version. Once I did this, I have no more problems with the charts when Open GL is enabled.

It was a weird issue but at least it's fixed. Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.
