Radargadgets USB AIS

Hi all,

I have a USB Radargadgets dongle which I have been running under Linux on my old boat PC, I have just changed the system to a win 8.1 tablet and have gone to get the Win 8 drivers to find the site no longer exists.

Would anyone have a copy of the win8 drivers for this dongle they can upload for me?

Thanks in advance guys.

Cheers
Dave

Re: Radargadgets USB AIS

Hi kiwidave,

looks like the GPS BU-353-S3 and W8 problem connectivity.

Basically, W8 when you are plugin a new device, W8 want to find a "sign driver", so you need to cheat on it by :
- installing the old driver,
- pluging you device before starting the PC and then, it should be OK when you start you PC.

This is working for my installation (GPS BU-353-S3 and W8 machine).

Another way, after installing the old driver, is by disabling the automatic update of the device (Configuration Panel), and you should be able to start the machine and plug your device after.

Another cheap material (Windows & Linux) replacing the Radargadget USB AIS solution is provided by AISspotter.com - HOME
where you will find :
an USB GPS set,
an USB AIS set
or a dual solution (GPS + AIS)

FYI Radar Gadgets AIS (Mirrorbow Technology) Owner Dies

FYI

Radar Gadgets AIS (Mirrorbow Technology) Owner Dies

If anyone here has bought the USB based AIS from Radar Gadgets in the last 6 weeks and hasn't received it, the reason is now clear.

I had a phone call from the sister of Andy Thorne last night. He died after a very short illness on the 2nd of July. He was only 45, he'd stared getting bad headaches docs thought it was blood pressure. He died 2 weeks later.

We'd sold his AIS units through VisitMyHarbour website, and were getting concerned by reports of non delivery from end customers... we'd been unable to contact him and were worried.

Andy was straight up and honest, his product and after sales were 1st class.

His mother and sister are trying to do something about his website. They have only just got his phone, and responded to my enquiries.

If anyone has bought and not received the AIS unit, I suggest getting a refund via PayPal straight away. Please spread the word.

Re: Radargadgets USB AIS

I have another brand of AIS Usb Stick Receiver, Seanexx.
They have a range test online from their Dual Channel Ais Stick, itīs in german, but range was up to 32 miles.
Seanexx RX200 Dual Channel AIS STick Range Test

I have the older single channel AIS receiver from them, similar to the Aisspotter and tried out different antenna setups with the adaptors coming with the stick,... the higher the antenna is placed on the boat the better the range on my boat, but always also depending on seacondition.
Iīm cruising and i have the small AIS Receiver stick as a backup to my VHF Ais Combi (Standard Horizon Gx2100) for my old Netbook, altough i would now just get the real Dual Channel Receiver Rx200.
If you have no GPS mouse on your computer itīs ok to live a switched single channel (Aisspotter PIA with GPS or Seanexx Rx110 with GPS).

BUT, itīs much safer if you get the signals from both AIS channels all the time in parallel, you donīt have the risk to miss any AIS message. There is a reason why all conventional AIS Receivers are Dualchannel receivers. For a landbased tightbudget Shipspotting station a oldstyle single channel Receiver would be ok for me. On my yacht where AIS is a safety feature i want to see all the shipmovement every movement around me as early and clearly as possible => Dual Channel.

@Gyro: send me a pm when you want to know more about the range from my system.

Re: Radargadgets USB AIS

Two different AIS USB Stick receivers on the market, thatīs nice. Good for Opencpn community that the original concept from Radargadgets was developed further, i like it.
In the supplementary hardware section on the opencpn page the seanexx AIS USB dongle is missing. Maybe one of the moderators can put that information there???
