Problem version 5 and connection

I updated from version 4.8.4 to 5.0.0. on a windows 10 system. Before com port 7 was used for connection to a Raymarine network with USB Gateway YDNU-02 RF. Everything was working fine. After the update I had during start of open cpn for 3 seconds connection and than not anymore. Open cpn did not open the port (com7). There was no data going in or out.
I tried everything and after 2 hours i gave up, went back to version 4.8.4 and everything was working fine again. Version 5 has a bug with the connections.

Re: Problem version 5 and connection

Rainer,

If this is windows

1. You could try to do a parallel installation, so v4.8.8 (recommended instead of 4.8.4) and v5.0.0 are both available.
2. Also after you do that, you could rename the opencpn.ini file to opencpn.old.ini and start v5.0.0 which will create a default ini file which you will have to configure for your connection. This may help.

3. Later you can rename the opencpn.old.ini back to opencpn.ini

Re: Problem version 5 and connection

Hi rgleason,
I did rename the open.ini and tried that, before I gave up. Result was the same.
Open cpn connect only the 1st time after start for approximately 3 seconds and then drop the connection. For me it appeared as if in the connection a time run out and than it's dropped.
I was searching in google if I am the only one with problems in this type of connection, but I am not. In some other cases the pc of the people even crashed.
Also in the help it says clearly that a lot was changed with the connections.
My gateway showed very clearly that the com port is not opened!
In my opinion it has a general problem with the connection from open cpn side.
About the parallel installation: my version is running fine now and I only need it as backup (had that before that chart plotter went "dead" with the touch screen).
kind regards
Rainer

Re: Problem version 5 and connection

Rainer,
I realize this a backup system and appreciate you reported it. We would like to track this down if possible. If you have some time, sending us the ini file and log file for the failing installation will help.

Also, what graphics board are you using?

Re: Problem version 5 and connection

oh...forgot,
no other program uses com 7, I even changed it to com1, com 8 and after that i had enough and changed it back 2 com 7 and downgraded to 4.8.4.
The installation didnt fail, it finished it properly, open cpn worked properly, just the com port didnt work!

Re: Problem version 5 and connection

Thank you Rainer, for the additional details and good information. We understand about the ini and log files. If you should do a parallel install of v5.0.0 in the future and run across this same problem again, you if you could upload those files to this thread, it would be very helpful.
