Problem reading KAP format

Hi all!
I downloaded last version of opencpn but I got some problem with KAP format I got from downloadlayer.
OpenCPN scan correctly the map but I can't get depth and other detail.
I got what you see in the linked image
Any idea how to solve?

Bye
Alessio

Re: Problem reading KAP format

smlick...
Your screenshot looks like the KAPs were generated from OpenStreetMap/OpenSeaMap data. Those do not contain any depth information and little to none (depending on the location) navigation information.
They might serve as very general overview maps, but you should probably look for real nautical charts if you need nautical charts.
For your area of interest, which seems to be the Mediterranean, there are no free nautical charts available as far as we know, but to various degree reasonably priced charts that work with OpenCPN can be bought from o-charts.org and Fugawi.

Hi Pavel! Are you sure? I grabbed by openseamap. The KAP for the Mediterranean West is around 540MB so I think some information may be in.
Have you tried to download from openseamap?

Re: Problem reading KAP format

Of course I do know what data the OpenSeaMap chartsets contain...
That the archive size is 540MB says exactly nothing about the quality of the data on the pictures in the KAPs. What it kind of says is there will be hundreds of KAP files in the archive and that is exactly what we can see from the chart outlines visible on your screenshot, so there is nothing wrong with your download or OpenCPN.

Re: Problem reading KAP format

They sure are somewhat useful, just not for the thing you probably wanted to use them for...
For illustration, the difference between a real nautical chart and the OSM KAP from our port is shown on the attached screenshots. To be completely fair, around Europe, you will sometimes find a little more on the OSM KAPs than me here at the very end of the world. But never the depths...

I need the depth detail so if it’s not present in openmaps is not the right place for me :-(
I’ll search a cheap Mediterranean west map.

Thanks again for your support

Saying nothing about its quality but they have a layer displaying some depth contours.

Yes, for quite some time. GEBCO data with 30 arc sec resolution. And they do not render it to the KAPs for a reason, I would say...

Re: Problem reading KAP format

If you don´t need very big regions and know where you will go, S-63 charts can be an alternative.
Still not as inexpensive as oeSENC, but still reasonable in cases.

While waiting for the Italian oeSENC charts we are in Sardinia now using S-63.

And they show soundings (the overcrowded screenshot is done explicetely).
And tell you if they don´t have actual soundings too...
