Problem Installing Charts

I've followed the steps in the manual and read FAQS. When I attempt to install charts from the toolbox setting, what I see displayed is a folder containing what appears to be the contents of my C drive. There is a folder for OpenCPN, but nothing that appears to be chart directories/locations (as is demonstrated in the manual). How do I find and install charts? In particular I am looking for the entrance to SF Bay Area to start with.

PS. I've ordered a Globalsat USB GPS mouse to use with this.

Thanks

Re: Problem installing charts

Evan..

OpenCPN does not come with any charts,so that is clear...

From the charts area, you have to select the directory of charts you have first got to create. Having downloaded charts from somewhere, put them in this CHARTS directory, select the CHARTS directory and click on the 'ADD SELECTION' button.
Finally,'Force full database rebuild' button, following which your charts should be installed and visible.

You might start with the NOAA free NGA charts which you will find within the OpenCPN directories. NGA Charts Status Region Miscellaneous at OpenCPN.info (English)

All NOAA charts of the USA are free to download here:
RNC Downloads

Good luck!

Re: Problem Installing Charts

I've followed the steps in the manual and read FAQS.
I have downloaded the The East Asia Hydrographic Commission charts for the south China Sea but are unable to view them. I have loaded them in a directory and they are in the active chart directory.I have set up the vector charts in toolbox as suggested with on results .I am running version 2.5.0 on windows vista .I can view cm93 charts from this area if put them in the active directory.Any help would be appreciated .

Re: Problem Installing Charts

Thanks for the prompt reply.
After downloading and sucessfully unziping the NOAA ENC charts I have found that unzipping the files with 7-zip was the problem I had with the south china sea charts.I have now extracted them and they are working fine .
Thanks once again. My mistake.

These are the NOAA charts. Nautical Charts & Pubs

Download the OR, WA and AK charts then extract them into a folder.

In the charts tab of Tools identify this folder and do a Force Full Database rebuild.

The Canadian charts are not free.

bobconnie,
OpenCpn is just like the capn but different to look at. Prettier,I'd say. You give her charts to read and a gps, ais, and she will put it together. Have a look right here:
