Polar Files - Ingestion

There are three plugins that we know about that use Polars:
weather_routing_pi
polar_pi
tackandlay_pi

Polar files come in a garden variety with several different types of headers, capitalized or not, [twa, TWA, twa/tws, TWA/TWS] some without wind speeds fully labeled, some with tab delimiters, others with semicolons and in a variety of degrees.

This thread is an effort to sort ingestion of these various Polar files.
Please understand that weather_routing_pi has a certain format that it likes that is native, however Sean has been able to adjust to importing various formats of polar files and provide some messages when it can't be done, to help.

Perhaps this approach can be used in Polar_pi and TackandLay. Also perhaps Polar_pi and TackandLay_pi have some good techiques.

In any event [opinion] I think all of these plugins should support a single comment format, and be able to import or ingest some varieties of that.

OpenCPN.org - does not seem to be working.
However in the Opencpn Manual, weather-routing-pi writeup, at the end there is a separate page about Polar Files written to help with polar "ingestion". It might be helpful, but Sean may have some more concrete suggestions.

Please post your comments in this thread.

Thank you Sean, Peter and Dave. For helping to make OpenCPN plugins much greater than just the individual parts (which are good anyway).

Re: Polar Files - Ingestion

Yester I played for a first time with Gribs and weather routing plugin: Basically I got is working nicely, but the polars seem to be way off, too slow I think.

I inserted the boat data to the weather routing plugin (Displacement LOA, LOW etc.). Is this the input data for the weather routing? I also tried to use some of the polar files (Catalina36 is quite similat boat) that come with OpenCPN installation, but those only resulted some errors.

http://opencpn.org/ is down, so I cannot access the documentation right now...

Kaptah, you can access the documentation thru the Opencpn menu bar and the "?" icon.

I'm absolutely agree to unified the format for those plugins. Opencpn is not a base with 1 plugin who is working independently than others, but One good software enriched by a lot of plugins have to work together.
