Have you test the full screen for the main window.
I have volontary limited the windows wider because i want that we can use this program with a netbook (1024*600).
I normally use a resolution of 1440*900, but I have also tried it at 1024*768
I use Windows 7; I do not understand "police size"
I ran Polauto in full-screen mode and the result was the same with some fields cut off, but the problem is more severe in the Configure window.

I am attaching a screenshot (full-screen) with configure window open, and I highlighted the setting with red boxes...using Harmut's NMEA file (from Rick), as you see, I am still getting speed <1

Hello Indigojon,
You can test with this file :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwR...it?usp=sharing
I also update Polauto with kts vs Nds.
Patrick

Now, it's possible to widen the Conf window in Polauto.

Rick,
actually you can download from:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwR...it?usp=sharing

I wait some days before update on Pratiques et techniques de la plaisance.
If it's OK, i'll update.
Bests Regards
Patrick.

Re: PCSail - Excel sheet to make VPP for Sailing yachts

Thank you Patrick, I am traveling until Tuesday so I will test when I am back in Denver and post results here. I appreciate that you made the changes; I think they will be very helpful.

Re: PCSail - Excel sheet to make VPP for Sailing yachts

Now that I am back home I have had some chance to work with Patrick's Polauto program and evaluate some of the new changes he has made. I want to say that I am very impressed, not only with the abilities that the program brings, but also by his enthusiasm and willingness to look at suggestions for making the program even better.

I began by manually copying polar data from my Nobeltec VNS program, and entering it, again manually, into the newest version of Polauto. I did this for wind speeds of 8kt and 10kt, and this was easily accomplished. When finished, Polauto displayed the polar plot diagram attached as Polauto Polar 12-13-13.

Because Patrick had so nicely implemented the conversion of Polauto polars to the .xml format which SailCruiser (NavSim Technologies) uses, I simply renamed the .xml file to .npp (the SailCruiser import format), and imported the polar into SailCruiser. Opening it in SailCruiser displayed the polar plot diagram as shown in attachment SailCruiser Polar from Polauto.

The final step was to use the polar to lay out a projected sailing course. I set a true wind speed of 10kt from 0 degrees true, and asked SailCruiser to calculate the appropriate tacks for the blue route shown in attachment SailCruiser Tacks. You will see from the 10kt polar that the ideal upwind course is 36 degrees off the true wind, and that is what SailCruiser is recommending as the optimum tacking angle with respect to the wind (obviously, the third tack would be shortened to avoid running aground ). As either windspeed or direction changes, SailCruiser will alter the recommended tacks accordingly, based on the polar data.

As I said previously, the algorithms for the tacking calculations are licensed by SailTimer (Dr. Craig Summers), and it would be ideal if the methodology could be incorporated in OpenCpn. As you can see, the combination of Patrick's Polauto program and a program which can use the polar data to compute tacking time to the destination would be a useful sailing tool.

Do you think SailTimer algorythm would work with Weather_Routing_pi plugin that already does weatherrouting?

There are some other interesting Polar software but not open source..

Re: PCSail - Excel sheet to make VPP for Sailing yachts

Two Windows programs, non-OpenCPN, but useful tools are

Polauto - Website polar creation. Translation from his website. Create polar sailboat sailing (integrated in Logbook) This software allows to create polar hand and save them. And also to create polar automatically browsing thanks to a serial port (USB or Bluetooth)or WiFi connection (or both) which will transmit the data. This data is stored and can be retrieved .pol for use in other programs. Data can been filtered. You can import other polar files. The sea state is also configurable automatic recording.
By giving different names to the pole, we can consider the configuration of the sails.

NavMonPC NavMonPc This can record and make histograms and do a dozen other things. It is useful for reading nmea data, filtering and sending it to Opencpn too. Acts like a very much more elaborate VDR with many features.

OpenCPN has many of the tools needed to to record and create polars and use them now.
VDR_pi - record and play (need to add player controls, sliding bar where to start, etc)
-It might be useful to have a bar histogram of boat speed, wind direction and wind speed
-to see which segments would be the best areas for making a polar.
- Ability to clip that segment and save it to make a polar of it.
Polar_pi - interpret, display and edit polars,
Weather_routing_pi - use polars with grib files and climatology to create routes
SweepPlot_pi - monitor sailing performance
TackandLay_pi (being improved) - determine when to tack. (someday add set and drift calcs)

Sailing Console Someday it would be very nice to develop a full "Tactical Sailing Console" - Big Tom Speedy was doing that last fall. We have not heard from him for awhile.
