Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

Hello,

After reading the excellent article: https://1plus1blog.com/2017/04/19/fa...dr-et-opencpn/, I realized it and it works perfectly!
For solo sailing, all that is missing is an alarm that would allow me to rest more serenely off!
So I turned to the plugin 'watchdog' which proposes to establish a guard zone around the boat with the plugin 'OCpn draw' and to warn in case of presence of a ship (equipped with a transponder!) in the defined area.
I am under openplotter 1.2, with opencpn 5.0.0, OCpn Draw 1.5 and Watchdog 1.9042.
Despite many tests, the presence of an AIS target does not trigger any watchdog action that does not seem to detect it.
I made a test under windows by connecting Opencpn to the server sinagot.net to recover AIS and there, everything is ok, which seems to eliminate a mistake of manipulation on my part! (the same test under openplotter does not work !!).
Someone would have tried to set an AIS alarm with watchdog and could he help me ??
Cordially.

AIS CPA alarms are built into the main part of OpenCpn, no plugin is required. Are you trying to do something extra?

Look in Tools -> Options -> Ships -> AIS Targets.

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

Hello, Thank you for your answer. I was considering, of course, to use
the option you offer me, but it does not allow me to use a
command line so I can switch a gpio to control an external alarm
(which lets me not need an audio amp!); watchdog allows me,
and works fine on Windows, but not on linux so not on Raspberry! A bug on the linux version of the watchdog plugin ??? cordially

Have your read the manual? If not, you should not make such statements as it misleads others.

Have you copied the GUID from OcpnDraw_pi into an alarm for WatchDog_pi?

You also need to use ocpn_draw 1.6

(in the process of being edited for version 1.6, so it has some red) to create the guard zone. Then take the GUID and copy it into a new watchdog alarm.

Sean built this plugin, while sailing almost around the world. He uses linux on RPI. It works. If there is a real problem please let us know. (Disclosure: I have not used Linux or Openplotter and things may be different, but I believe the plugins do work on linux and an alarm for AIS guard zone can be created.)

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

Hello,
thanks for your reply, and i'm happy to come across a specialist.
First, I do not try to make other members doubt, but I try to understand through specialized advice where the error lies.
I have of course read the watchdog manual and that of Draw and I put the question in this forum because nothing in these readings told me of error! I copied the GUID of draw in my alarm ZdG of watchdog.
I present here my approach:
Not currently at the port, but working at home, I do not have AIS 'normal' targets. So I created a new network connection in opencpn with for address sinagot.net on port 2497 which m ' offers a large amount of AIS targets in the English Channel and North Sea. I then place my boat on the road of a cargo ship, but I do not get an alarm when it moves in my guard zone! Would there be a fault to do so?
I specify that with the same approach, the alarms are triggered in windows 7 with version 1.5 of Draw and still under opencpn 5.0.0!
You also propose to use Draw version 1.6, but on my raspberry pi, after adding the 'Xenial' repository and updated apt-get, version 1.5 seems to be the most recent!
I also tried this combination on linux mint 19 and ej falls on the same problem as on the raspberry pi.
I remain open to any trail and thank you for your interest.

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

Dear kinefou,
You have gone past my experience with the rpi and openplotter, so I can only make some suggestions.
1. There has been some work done on "sounds" in beta versions of Opencpn. What version are you using? (Please don't list the Openplotter version.)
2. Are you certain that sound is working? Test it. There is a way to test it in Watchdog.
3. It is true that ocpn_draw has been improved and further developed, and I am wondering if something has changed. We will have to get Jon Gouge's attention, which I will do.

4. Can you get Sailoog aware of this?
5. Consider how we can isolate the problem.
- Does the transfer of other GUID to Watchdog from Ocpn_draw work?
- Do other Watchdog alarms work?
6. I am afraid you have now become a program tester. I hope you are willing.

I have written Jon, he uses linux too.

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

Hi,
I have just built watchdog on my linux system using the current git repository and installed it into OCPN. I am using the latest version of OD, still 1.5 as I have been away for a few weeks but soon to be put out as 1.6 (only change will be the latest translations). I just did a test using the VDR plugin to replay one of my small voyages with AIS targets that got close. This is as close as I can get to actually being on the boat to test it. On my system, ubuntu 18.04, the watchdog alarms go off when an AIS target enters a guard zone. I have it set to make a noise and raise a dialog box to help me see what is happening.

I just went to my guard zone (almost full circle) which was set to 'exclusion', right clicked and copied the GUID, then went to watchdog and created a new 'boundary' alarm. I set its type to AIS, pasted in the GUID, set the Boundary Type to 'Any', set the check frequency 3 seconds, set the alarm action to sound and message box and automatically reset. When an AIS target came into the guard zone it triggered the alarm. One thing to check is that the alarm is 'active', i.e. the check box for the alarm is checked in the watchdog dialog.

Can you please try again using the same setup as me (I can provide the vdr file I have used if needed, but it is in Australia) and try the test again. I would prefer if you could let the boat move around and the targets move 'naturally' into the guard zone (i.e. not moving the boat via mouse clicks to get a target into the guard zone. Let me know how it goes.

Regards
jon

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

Thank you very much for your interest.
When reading your post, I find that decidedly, this alarm works as expected!
Yet at home, nothing to do!
I followed your instructions to the letter, I placed my boat on the road of a moving cargo ship, but no alarm is triggered when it enters my guard zone.
Note that my boat has no gps (so I can move it at will), but I think it is georeferenced by opencpn!
On the other hand, you use version 1.5 of OD, but what is the watchdog? Under windows, it is the version 2.04 (and that works very well!), But under linux, it is the version 1.9042 (can be an incompatibility at this level?).
It would be very nice of you to send me your Vdr file and tell me if your boat needs a GPS or if its only position on the map is enough to operate the alarms (for zone alarms, it works very well under linux so on raspberry!): only the guard zones pose a problem.

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

hi rgleason,

Thank you for forwarding my post to a follower of linux!
My problem is specific to this OS, because under windows, everything works to wishes.
On my boat, I have a raspberry that can not (or very badly) walk under windows.
That's why I have to find the linux solution.
To answer your few questions, I'm running OpenCpn 5.0.0.
The sound is not really important for me because I try to switch a gpio to operate a relay that will power an alarm (alarm more powerful and more economical at rest an amp connected permanently!).
The GUID transfer works because I do not have problems with zone alarms.
By necessity, I become a program tester because I'm stubborn, I like to understand and I like computer despite all my shortcomings!

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

You are a perfect beta tester, stubbornness is a virtue, so you must be a Taurus.

Are you able to build linux plugins. I know Sean has done this a lot on his older rpi's. I do not know if this is sending you to commit hari kari, but
Perhaps you could clone Sean's repository and build it?
https://github.com/seandepagnier/watchdog_pi

It is PLUGIN_VERSION 2.4.0 2018-08-24 "ov50"

I also have no idea how Openplotter works, but all linux users have a small superiority complex about how easy Linux is with a command line and able to download, clone, build and compile everything (---justified I think) . So maybe is now a good time to learn?

If you figure it out, take some time to write it up please, I don't really know how openplotter works or if compiling is the same.

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

One other thought, kinefou. Why not just try running a VDR file which has the boat moving through lots of AIS traffic.

Then set your guard zone up and see if that works?
I have many of these files and will upload a couple that I think will provide a good test.

Even better, use my old FileThingie here https://tgp-architects.com/files/

Enter rguser and rgpass

Go to Nmea or NmeaServer and download the Hartmut and Hakeford files first and try them.

Re: Pb with draw-watchdog under openplotter 1.2 and Opencpn 5.0.0

Thanks a lot for your answer. No, I'm not a bull, but a virgin rising balance!
Which does not stop me from trying to get to the bottom of things.
I downloaded the Harmut file that I imported into linux opencpn and I get alarms when I configure them in Ships / Ais target of OpenCpn, but still nothing with watchdog. On the other hand under windows, watchdog works perfectly well with your file.
Thank you also for the link to Sean's github, but I can not compile it, because I have the impression that a 'build' folder is missing.
I will ask the question on a linux forum to some specialist of the compilation (which I do not belong, unfortunately) !!
Honor you for your patience and your professionalism.
cordially
Kinefou
Ps:
forgive me the mistakes of language, but I write in French that I translate with a program, not being familiar enough with the English to express myself freely !!

Would you be compiling this 'standalone' or with opencpn? In windows when we compile standalone, we make the build directory and put the correct Plugin API version of opencpn.lib in the build directory. Then we execute the cmake commands from the build directory.

Don't know if that will help, but maybe these will help:
