output nmea string without active route

I am trying to use opencpn on a new onboard pc setup to drive a raymarine s1000 autopilot. The problem is the s1000 uses a full time gps input rather than a fluxgate or other heading source. My understanding is that opencpn only outputs to the autopilot when there is an active route which means that I would not be use the autopilot in simple heading hold mode.

Hopefully someone has a suggestion for how I can make this work, the software is otherwise leaps and bounds ahead of the old maptech I have been using.
