Re: OpenCPN will not start on MAC

John...
You are the first to report this scam so far. Any chance you still have that e-mail? I (and perhaps the forum admins as well) would be pretty interested in seeing it...

Thanks

Pavel

Re: OpenCPN will not start on MAC

At the strong suggestion from Norton 360 and Delwyn Technologies, I deleted all references to this issue. I've had a Norton Rep from Texas dialed on my system twice since to monitor any reoccurrence and twice a week I check my apps folder for anything new.

Re: OpenCPN will not start on MAC

John-

Since you are posting this problem on a Mac thread, might I suggest that the solution is a Mac?

In all seriousness, your problem may well have originated with malware infecting your Windows machine via Explorer. Whether or not this is the case, one of the top recommendations for security with Windows is to stop using Explorer - it is just too great a security risk. Use either Google's Chrome or Mozilla's Firefox for your browser, and particularly with Firefox consider adding security extensions.

Personally, I use a Mac with ClamXav anti-malware, and Firefox with a rather long list of extensions. With ClamWin and Firefox with appropriate extensions Windows security can be made acceptable.

Re: OpenCPN will not start on MAC

Interesting! All of the tech advice I've received so far has been to avoid Google Chrome.
I'm a pre-PC guy who started in things related to computers in 1968 running a IBM Model 81 card sorter and finished using PC's to drill into large IBM mainframes to extract data to support the Stanford Medical Center at Stanford University. I'll stick with Microsoft - Thanks.

BTW I see that you're in Portland. I was on a friends boat on the Columbia River 10 days ago.
PM me if you wish

Re: OpenCPN will not start on MAC

Actually, I was advised to open the download and then drag the icon to applications. Whether I drag to applications or double click the icon, I have the same result with an immediate crash. Anyone have any thoughts?
