OpenCPN Version 5 Released

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
---------------------

23 March, 2019

OpenCPN Version 5.0 Released

The OpenCPN Development Team is proud to announce the release of OpenCPN Version 5.0

This version is a feature upgrade and maintenance release of OpenCPN.

OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic charting system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and ARM computer architectures.
Since widespread introduction in 2008, OpenCPN has gained a solid reputation.

OpenCPN is running on hardware from tiny Raspberry Pis with 4" screens up to networked workstations. Specific user scenarios and needs are easily accommodated by using the Plug-in architecture and the wide scope of user settings.
A responsive international user and developer community together with integrated documentation help make installation and use of OpenCPN a pleasure.

Some of the features of OpenCPN include:

Quilted Raster(RNC) and Vector(ENC) digital chart display
Full compliant support for official vector charts in S-57/S-63 format and InlandENCs
Industry standard GPS receiver interfacing, with "moving map" on-screen vessel tracking
AIS receiver interfacing with configurable target safety monitoring
Integrated Route, Track, and Waypoint database, with industry standard Import/Export capabilities
Tide and Current prediction, with on-screen overlay of predicted data.
Broad International Language support
PlugIn architecture allowing on-going third-party functional enhancements

OpenCPN is released under the GPLV2 license. The executable program and its source code are available for immediate, free, and unlimited download from opencpn.org, and several other sources.

As a successor to OpenCPN Version 4.8, OpenCPN Version 5.0 contains many new features and enhanced functions.

Among them are:

..Redesigned user interface, incorporating modern user interface elements and concepts.
..Support for multiple chart views simultaneously, using different charts display options if desired.
..User defined templates for easy recall of multiple configurations.
..Support for the widely available MBTiles chart format.
..Extended options for route and Waypoint creation.
..Expanded display of vector chart (ENC) information, including embedded images.
..Measurably improved performance and reliability over all supported platforms.

We hope you enjoy the new features of OpenCPN Version 5.0, and look forward to your continued feedback and support.

More information is available at opencpn.org

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

Ahoy OpenCPN Family...

Well, we did it again.
OpenCPN 5.0.0 is fully released for general download.

I and the rest of the developers cannot tell you how proud and gratified we feel at the level of support received from the Beta Test Team. Sometimes sharp, occasionally cantankerous, but always helpful, your comments and criticisms have helped to form O5 into a great product. You all should be proud, too.

But this in not the end of the road, by any means. We'll take a short break, and then get going on the next round of upgrades and improvements. We have a list of ideas discovered in Beta testing, and they are calling....

Thanks again

Dave, and the entire OpenCPN team.

Good stuff. There goes an afternoon of playing

So far I've found that the charts are more difficult to read. The text seems a lot more bolder, and lines a lot thicker.

Are you running with OpenGL ON or OFF? Test the differences.
The other point to control is if the physical screen width gets detected correctly.

And next playing with object and user interface sizes.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

A bit clearer with OpenGL off, but still IMO a bit too heavy on the text. With OpenGPL off, it is dog slow, almost unusable, and I get black boxes on the screen around some navigation icons.

This is on a 2015 Macbook Pro with Mojave 10.14.3

On our macMini (late 2012) it looks like this (left oeSENC, right S-63).
The real display looks a bit more crispier than the screen shot.
OpenGL OFF is nearly a no-go as in your case.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

OK that's not too different from mine then. I just did a reinstall of 4.8 there is a slight loss of definition in 5 compared to 4.8 but it is small.

My problem was that I also have a windows machine that I looked at, and the fonts and chart objects are extremely well defined, crisp and clear. So it's something to do with the way the charts are displayed on the Mac. Outside of the charts, the rest of the OpenCPN display and text is crisp and clear as one would expect.

Anyhow, long story short, it's not a specific OpenCPN 5 issue, so probably best explored in another thread.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

I am running OpenCPN on a RPI. Current versjon is 4.8.8, and I was excited to see that 5.0 was out, and wanted to upgrade.

When I run sudo apt-get update and subsequently sudo apt-get install, it still remains with ver 4.8.8. How do I go about to get ver 5.0? Thanks.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

I'm also finding left docking doesn't work.

When I installed 5 on both Mac and Windows, I had a left docked dashboard (left over from 4.8). Once you undock this though, it seems impossible to get it left dock again in version 5. It will dock top, bottom and right, but not left.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

I just installed ver. 5.0 on my Thinkpad T440 running Win10 pro. Installation fine, but I cannot see any of my maps. The previous bar at the bottom with selection of maps is not there.
What do I do wrong?
