OpenCPN Version 5 for Intel HD Graphics 6xx

Hello Windows users...

For those experiencing problems with Intel HD 6xx integrated GPUs in OpenGL mode, I have prepared a test version to try and isolate the offending element in the GL driver stack, or OCPN's interface to it.

For this test I have simply disabled OpenGL VBO mode for all Intel processors, and posted a logfile entry to that effect. There will be a slight reduction in performance on vector chart rendering.

If you like, please download and install this test version (5.0.518) . Test as you would operate normally, especially those configurations that exhibits problems with the Production Release version of OPCN 5.
Please report results here.

If this version works for you, feel free to use it confidently for live navigation. No other upstream changes from github master branch have been included.

Thanks for helping us track this down...

Eureka! Dave I am renaming you TopCat! Zooming now works perfectly, and I am not so sure that it is any slower than before. Mind you, I do have an i7 and 16gb of RAM plus an SSD which helps.

Thank you so much for fixing this. I am really impressed with the way the OpenCPN team took on this reported problem, and didn't dismiss it as end user error.

Another donation coming up!

Regards

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 for Intel HD Graphics 6xx

Dave, I did try with and without OpenGL and for the charts S57 and CM93 ed2
it sems OK; but not with raster ed3. we end up with bluerring and difficulty to update the screen. No matther if it is NVidia or Intel graphic. I have Widows 10 pro upto date.
Best regards.
Note:- Unfortunately. I can not send you the log file, I have reverted to ver 5.0.0 before thinking about it. If absolutely necessary we can start over again.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 for Intel HD Graphics 6xx

Hello Dave,
I have a lenovo Ideapad 300 Laptop with Intel HD 520 graphics running windows 10 V1809 using the stock (updated) lenovo "Modified" intel graphics drivers. I have not made the step to manually install the latest intel drivers as the installed had advised against it . I've read that I shouldn't worry about that and may install them anyway.

I was having trouble with OpenCPN crashing with a grayed out screen and VBO errors A 1280 and C 1280 in the log when I opened a (admittedly large, 80MB) track and waypoint file stored in OpenCPN 4.8 in the 5.0.0 release. I updated to your 5.0.518 test version and the problem went away with no apparent loss of functionality. Wanted you to know it helps the Intel HD 520 users as well. I can send you any other info that might be helpful, let me know.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 for Intel HD Graphics 6xx

Question: Will the download work with the radar plugin. The plugin requires the OpenGL turned on.

The chart zooming option is resolved on an Asus mini with the problem intel video chip by toggling off the OpenGL optioin. I am using the radar AND the zooms by turning on and off the OpenGL option.

Has anyone tested this fix with the radar plug in? If so what results?

Rae...
No reason why the patch version should not work with radar in GL mode.
Try it and see. Low risk.

What model of Asus Mini is showing the Intel graphics problem, please?

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 for Intel HD Graphics 6xx

Hi Dave:

Your update worked OK on Cool Bananas Asus Vivo Mini PC PN40 series. Now we can leave OpenGL on allowing Navico radar to function with the same settings.

Radar seems sensitive to boot up sequence and/or Wifi on or off. But good enough that we are confident it is workable.

Thanks so much...…

Cheers....

Patched v5.0.518 works with the radar plugin here on Scoots as well.

Cheers, Eric

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 for Intel HD Graphics 6xx

Hello Intel HD 620 users...

I finally got my hands on a modern Acer laptop with Intel HD620 graphics, in order to resolve the reported difficulties displaying ENCs using OpenGL mode.
And, as these things go normally, (and I half-expected), I cannot reproduce any error.

So, for any users here previously reporting troubles with the HD620 setup, I would appreciate some clues to exactly what operations, charts, environment, etc. are required in order to provoke a display problem or crash for this setup.

Thanks
Dave

ejs...

I'm not sure how a track/waypoint file alone could cause a crash, or at least in a way that the patched version could fix. Please tell me what charts, and what user actions were involved.
Thanks
Dave
