OpenCPN Version 4.8.2 Released

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
---------------------

06 February, 2018

OpenCPN Version 4.8.2 Released

The OpenCPN Development Team is proud to announce the release of OpenCPN Version 4.8.2

This version is a maintenance and feature enhancement release of OpenCPN.

OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic navigation system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and ARM computer architectures.
Since widespread introduction in 2008, OpenCPN has gained a solid reputation worldwide.

OpenCPN is running on hardware from tiny Raspberry Pis with 4" screens up to networked workstations. Specific user scenarios and needs are easily accommodated by using the Plug-in architecture and the wide scope of user settings.
A responsive international user and developer community together with integrated documentation help make installation and use of OpenCPN a pleasure.

Some of the features of OpenCPN include

Quilted Raster(RNC) and Vector(ENC) digital chart display
Full compliant support for official vector charts in S-57/S-63 format and InlandENCs
Industry standard GPS receiver interfacing, with "moving map" on-screen vessel tracking
AIS receiver interfacing with configurable target safety monitoring
Integrated Route, Track, and Waypoint database, with industry standard Import/Export capabilities
Tide and Current prediction, with on-screen overlay of predicted data.
Broad International Language support
PlugIn architecture allowing on-going third-party functional enhancements

OpenCPN is released under the GPLV2 license. The executable program and its source code are available for immediate, free, and unlimited download from github.com, and several other public sources.

As a successor to OpenCPN Version 4.8.0, OpenCPN Version 4.8.2 contains several incremental corrections and improvements.

Among them are:

.. Expanded integrated Chart Downloader sources.

We hope you enjoy OpenCPN Version 4.8.2, and look forward to your continued feedback and support.

More information is available at opencpn.org

OpenCPN Version 4.8.2 Released

Sound good at first glance. I shall take a closer look over the next day. What I would like is an adjustable easy way to resize the Arrow directions with OTCurrent.
Thanks for this good effort.

OpenCPN Version 4.8.2 Released
Dave and all the team

Thank you for all the work.

Just a little problem for linux users which have installed both PPA's “ppapencpn/opencpn” and “ppa:bdbcat/opencpn”.

The apt system will try to update to the highest nubmered version of OpenCPN which will be: 4.8.10204

The easiest way to resolve the problem is this is as follows:

Code:
sudo apt install ppa-purge # If not already installed
    sudo ppa-purge ppa:bdbcat/opencpn
Tested on Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10, Does not work on Raspberry pi. (ppa-purge not available) Use alternate method below.

Alternatively you could disable the PPA and force version 4.8.2. If you uninstall 4.8.10204, opencpn-doc and opencpn-gshhs* and many plugins will be removed and will have to be re-installed.

This is because they depend on each other. It is ok for Opencpn to depend on doc and gshhs but not the other way around. The plugins should not also depend on opencpn.

Also, most plugins are not available in the Artful and Bionic PPA's.

Thanks again
Jean-Marie

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.2 Released

Jean-Marie...

Thanks for the report.

I discovered the same migrating from Beta to Production, with similar PPA version numbering problems in my local final test. I decided to wait and see what creative solutions came from the community.

Your solution looks good.
We plan to clean this process up a bit more for the next major Release.

Meanwhile, the plugin builds for artful and bionic are coming along slowly, one by one. It is a big job to rebuild all the plugins....

Thanks
Dave

Portable OpenCPN 4.8.2 Problem

The problem concerns the CHRTLIST.DAT file. This file resides in the Program Data folder on Windows machines. I believe it is updated when a Full Database Rebuild is executed.

In creating a portable version of O the contents of the Program Data folder are placed in the single folder containing the Portable Version as well as the contents of the OpenCPN folder in Program Files, charts, Layers, etc.

When the program is run in the portable mode the chart database is rebuilt every time. And each time it is run an orphan file is created on the host titled 'xxxCHRTLIST.DAT' where 'xxx' is the name of the portable version folder. If the portable version is on the desktop this orphan file is created there. If the portable version is on a memory stick it is created on the memory stick at the same level as the portable version.

My suspicion is that this orphan file was intended to be placed in the Program Data folder which no longer exists in the portable configuration.

I have attempted to place this orphan file in the folder containing the portable version (after deleting the 'xxx') to no avail.

This is a new problem to OpenCPN. Previous versions have been OK.

Help would be appreciated.

How mean of you !!!!
Nothing creative... Brute force... I compiled 4.8.2 over the previously compiled beta (using git pull) therefore retaining all plugings...

Hi Dave,

i'm packaging self for Debian Stretch (9.x) and my packages are calling:

for beta: opencpn_4.8.1-{timestamp}_{arch}.deb
for stable: opencpn_4.8.2-0_{arch}.deb

Updates with this nameschema are clean

Re: Portable OpenCPN 4.8.2 Problem

Perhaps some progress but not resolved.

In the portable version folder I created a 'Program Data' folder with an 'opencpn' sub-folder and moved the requisite contents of the Program Data folder into this one.

When running the portable version and redoing the Chart Directories the program displayed OK. Closing and re-running the rebuild of the Chart Database did not happen! Repeated opening and closing confirmed this.

HOWEVER ... the program once again created an orphan file on the host computer location. Deleting the orphan file and running the portable version once again caused the program to do a Chart Database rebuild.

Duhhhh

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.2 Released

Hello Dave,

A curious phenomenon, new, never seen before, with O482 and Thunderbird.

I open O482
I open Thunderbird client-mail software
Because I have several users of Thunderbird, a first window opens in which I choose which user want to use it.

BUT,

Now, this intermediate window appears and disappears immediately in the background without giving me the time to choose the user.
I have to :
- either tidy up OpenCPN manually to get access to Thunderbird.
- or click on the Thunderbird icon (at the bottom of my windows 10 screen) to access this Thunderbird window.

Gilletarom.

Gille...
I use Thunderbird as well but I don't see what you describe.
A possible difference?:
One of my mail accounts is set as the "standard" account.
- In a Thunderbird account left click and use "Settings"
- Now in the bottom of the (left?) accounts list, beside the settings dialog, there's a one row option "Account arrangements" (Or similar in English/French) Click that.
- If one of your accounts was selected you can set this as the Standard account.
- Check if a Grib request now picks the correct sender account.

Or rename the latest Linux version to 4.8.20000

Still running 4.8.10204 and this version works very well.

Thanks for all the efforts.

P_Dub ...

A new version of OTCurrent is now available, but only for OpenCPN 4.8.2. Scaling of arrows is now possible by using 'Preferences'.

https://github.com/Rasbats/otcurrent...eases/tag/v1.5

Only a Windows installer at present.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. See the screenshot.
I speak well of multi-users. No multi-account.
