Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Yes I know how to select but, as of yesterday, cannot get to the three-dot buttons to make the choices.

Sorry, the screenshot didn't attach earlier.

Looking at your screenshot you need to scroll down, not to the right.
Maybe not so obvious, but look at the pinkish vertical strip on the upper right hand edge...

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Some window managers these days are trying to be "clever" and make the scroll bars tiny little lines that expand when you touch them. Sometimes they don't even expand. I hate this trend in UI development.

Me too! We don't all have high precision fingers, or screens.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Thanks for feedback but no, I cannot scroll in any way to get to the three-dotted buttons. The only way of getting there is using the Tab key and scrolling through the options. Once the buttons are highlighted, pressing the Tab key is the only way back.
This could very well be nothing directly to do with OpenCPN but rather a machine display issue to do with Qt (?) or something else.
I'm well out of my depth here. Just looking for clues.

So, I gather by the silence that I'm on my own with this or else in the wrong thread?
Any advice?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

You can try to grab the window corner or side and change the size. Sometimes the window manager doesn't put the scroll bar in unless you change the size of the window.

This issue is caused by some bug in your window manager and not OpenCPN I think. Probably you updated your system and this bug appeared.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Thank you. I've tried every conceivable (I think) way of resizing but nothing works. I guess I'm looking for some insight as to how these contents are handled programmatically so I can track down the (window manager) bug.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

OpenCPN uses wxWidgets with GTK as the dialog management library. This in turn uses the local window manager to render the dialogs. Scroll bars are as per the window manager. But the need for a scroll bar is probably decided by wxWidgets in conjunction with GTK libraries. So maybe you have updates GTK or some other library that popped this problem up. You said it suddenly started with no change in OpenCPN. So I suspect one of the libraries has been "updated".

Just the insight I needed thanks. I've also had some strange behaviour with dialog boxes in Calibre. Perhaps a fresh install of Ubuntu will fix.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Hey Ken
I am on my tablet so no screenshots.
Problem is caused by large string of sentences on line 1.
When this happens no slider appears on bottom of window.
Try using window launcher with your window horizontal across 2 screens.
Go to the right screen and keep stretching your window till the 3 dots appear.
Certainly an Ubuntu bug not open.
If I remembered correctly this was my fix.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Yep thanks.
Removing that list of sentences brought things under control. I could always get to the three-dot button with the Tab key. I was just testing with the long list of sentences; so it might not have been an upgrade that caused the problem, just the long list.
All good.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Im running Windows 10 Pro 32 bit on my AIS PC

OpenCPN 4.4.0 runs flawlessly 24/7

4.8.0 loads but the "window frame" frequently shows "(Not responding)" and after 45 minutes of unattended operation all AIS processing stops

On my linux display unit (An openpeak openframe also known as an O2 Joggler) 4.8.0 from the PPA runs flawlessly 24/7

the Serving AIS PC has been regressed to 4.4.0 and continues to give 24/7/ service

Happy to provide any appropriate debug info - just need to know whats of interest

Regards

BB

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

BB,

I don't recall a similar issue in the past. However, it's possible that one of your plugins is responsible for this behavior. Can you disable all plugins and then only enable each plugin one by one to see if one particular plugin is causing the "not responding" message?
