OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
---------------------

14 March, 2017

OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

The OpenCPN Development Team is proud to announce the release of OpenCPN Version 4.6.0

This version is a feature upgrade and maintenance release of OpenCPN.

OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic navigation system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and ARM computer architectures.
Since widespread introduction in 2008, OpenCPN has gained a solid reputation worldwide.

OpenCPN is running on hardware from tiny Raspberry Pis with 4" screens up to networked workstations. Specific user scenarios and needs are easily accommodated by using the Plug-in architecture and the wide scope of user settings.
A responsive international user and developer community together with integrated documentation help make installation and use of OpenCPN a pleasure.

Some of the features of OpenCPN include

Quilted Raster(RNC) and Vector(ENC) digital chart display
Full compliant support for official vector charts in S-57/S-63 format and InlandENCs
Industry standard GPS receiver interfacing, with "moving map" on-screen vessel tracking
AIS receiver interfacing with configurable target safety monitoring
Integrated Route, Track, and Waypoint database, with industry standard Import/Export capabilities
Tide and Current prediction, with on-screen overlay of predicted data.
Broad International Language support
PlugIn architecture allowing on-going third-party functional enhancements

OpenCPN is released under the GPLV2 license. The executable program and its source code are available for immediate, free, and unlimited download from github.com, and several other public sources.

As a successor to OpenCPN Version 4.4, OpenCPN Version 4.6 contains several new features and enhanced functions.

Among them are:

.. Substantial functional improvements and performance increases related to ENC vector charts.
.. User selectable InlandECDIS mode for increased safety and convenience while navigating inland waters.
.. Expanded User Manual bundled with Release download.

We hope you enjoy the new features of OpenCPN Version 4.6, and look forward to your continued feedback and support.

More information is available at opencpn.org

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Hi Dave,

Just did an in-place upgrade to 4.6 from 4.4 on my home windows PC and then launched the program. It's totally frozen and says not responding. Forcefully closed out of it and tried launching again, same result. It's totally locked.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Just an update, I temp renamed navobj.xml and launched the program again. It opened OK this time. It doesn't like my waypoints or tracks data? 4.4 launched fine with this data though. I then renamed the file back and launched again, it's frozen.

Here is my log file: http://www.getbentsportfishing.com/joey/log.txt

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Thinkpad T440, Windows 10 pro, update from version 4.4, very smooth update, everything functions (I think) and my interface from built-in GPS (in the T440) seems to work better.

Very nice, thank You

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

My backup nav is a Netbook, 1.6GHz Atom with 2GB RAM running XP service pack 3.
4.6.0 took ages to load and to respond to mouse clicks even on menus, so was unusable. I reverted to 4.4.0 and all was ok as before. after reading J805's posts above I then deleted the navobj file, reloaded 4.6.0 and it loads and runs at usable speed. My navobj file that works ok with 4.4.0 is 2.64Mb. Thanks programmers for all your efforts so far, greatly appreciated. Ian

Dave,

Just sent you a PM with my GPX file as well. Works fine in 4.4 but locks up 4.6 really bad to where I have to CTRL+ALT-DEL to get out of the program. Try and import it to 4.6 and see what happens.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Sounds like it's a widespread issue with 4.6 locking up since multiple people are running into the same problem. If you need to reinstall 4.4, here is the windows setup: http://www.getbentsportfishing.com/j....4.0_setup.exe

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

j805...

The problem is pretty clearly related to OpenGL on Windows stalling while trying to render more than 7000 Waypoints on one screen. Interestingly, does not have trouble on linux. I will investigate further.

Meanwhile, please try O4.6.0 again, with OpenGL mode turned OFF, just to confirm.

Thanks
Dave
