Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Has anyone succeeded installing 4.6.0 on a computer running Norwegian windows os? I have tried this on 4 different computers (2xWin7 and 2xWin10). Installation runs but the program will not start.
EventViewer (Program) Application Error (the same on all 4 computers):

Is OpenGL turned on? You may be running into the same issue that others are.

Try temp renaming your nav objects file and then try launching the program again if so.

Norton is a little too picky and I do override Norton when it comes to OpenCPN. We've submitted OpenCPN as users saying its a safe site but others need to do so too. Its heuristics and suspicious file level is set very high.

Have tryed to turn off OpenGL in 4.4.0 before updating. Same error.

Hi and thank you for your reply.

no window opens.

I tried different language of the ocpn installer.
I did not change my operating system language. Norwegian.

I assume OpenGL is turned on by default.

I tried temp renaming my nav objects file. no difference.
Tried full fresh install deleting all legacy data. same no start.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Win7 Intel nuc i3 integrated graphic Card.

Uninstalled 4.6.0 and reinstalled 4.4.0

The performance is dramatically worse with and without OpenGL on th latest version. I found with discrete graphics OpenGL does not work very well under intel. But the latest version makes it almost unworkable. 0.4.4 is fluent and works fine.

jeroenimo...

For reference, and help in isolating the OpenGL issues, can you tell us the size of your navobj.xml file? Number of Waypoints/Routes?

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Dave,

Do you understand why asking the display size causes such a slow down?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

When switching from OCPN 4.4.0 to 4.6.0 the navobj.xml file suddenly increase? And why?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

transmitterdan...

Sure, take a look at the code in OCPNPlatform class.

For Windows, we have seen that wxWidgets idea of screen size in MM is often just plain wrong. It is a known bug in wxWidgets, and affects linux gtk port as well. But we need a good number in order to scale the GL graphics engine, especially in the case of super high density (retina class) displays. So we ask the Windows device management system to tell us the characteristics of the monitor which is actually attached. To do this Windows enumerates the video ports, and reports the accurate results. And this, like much of the Windows device system, is a slow process.

So, our error is simply that we do not perform this expensive test just once on initialization, and cache the results. Presumably, most use cases for OCPN do not involve dynamic monitor detachment/attachment.

To fix this is simple, and relatively low risk.

As we have seen, it becomes most apparent when many, many routepoints need to be rendered for one screen image. And that is a use case that this abbreviated 4.5 Beta series simply missed, due to limited Beta test participation.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Perhaps you don't know but wxGetDisplaySizeMM() was fixed in wxWidgets 3.1.1. So better use the latest wxWidgets instead of the outdated versions. Even Linux fixes sometimes 7 years old bugs and security holes as just seen these days...
