OpenCPN Version 4.2 Released

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
---------------------

3 February, 2016

OpenCPN Version 4.2.0 Released

The OpenCPN Development Team is proud to announce the release of OpenCPN Version 4.2.0

This version is a feature upgrade and maintenance release of OpenCPN.

OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic navigation system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and ARM computer architectures.
Since widespread introduction in 2008, OpenCPN has gained a solid reputation.

OpenCPN is running on hardware from tiny Raspberry Pis with 4" screens up to networked workstations. Specific user scenarios and needs are easily accommodated by using the Plug-in architecture and the wide scope of user settings.
A responsive international user and developer community together with integrated documentation help make installation and use of OpenCPN a pleasure.

Some of the features of OpenCPN include

Quilted Raster(RNC) and Vector(ENC) digital chart display
Full compliant support for official vector charts in S-57/S-63 format and InlandENCs
Industry standard GPS receiver interfacing, with "moving map" on-screen vessel tracking
AIS receiver interfacing with configurable target safety monitoring
Integrated Route, Track, and Waypoint database, with industry standard Import/Export capabilities
Tide and Current prediction, with on-screen overlay of predicted data.
Broad International Language support
PlugIn architecture allowing on-going third-party functional enhancements

OpenCPN is released under the GPLV2 license. The executable program and its source code are available for immediate, free, and unlimited download from sourceforge.net, and several other sources.

As a successor to OpenCPN Version 4.0, OpenCPN Version 4.2 contains many new features and enhanced functions.

Among them are:

..Increased performance in all modes, particularly when using OpenGL graphics acceleration.
..Integrated Chart Downloader PlugIn, allowing systematic tracking and donwload of latest online charts from several popular sources.
..Integrated World Magnetic Model (WMM) PlugIn, providing accuratley calculated magnetic variation worldwide.
..Major update to embedded Users Manual.
..Measurably improved performance and reliability over all supported platforms.

We hope you enjoy the new features of OpenCPN Version 4.2, and look forward to your continued feedback and support.

More information is available at opencpn.org

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.2 Released

Hi,

It looks like I found a bug in GRIB plugin (Particle Map).
In 4.0.0 works but in 4.2.0 doesn't.
See pictures.

Hi,

I used "Write and send eMail request" (Saildocs) from GRIB plugin included in 4.2.0.
Please remove ".pdf" extension.

The grib file works under Windows 10 and OpenCPN 4.2.

Furthermore the new SVG icons are still too large and the settings window for other items than wind and current shows values for a not existing slider. The settings window is far too high (version 4.2.0 for Mac OS X).

Also the value in the WMM toolbar icon is still too small.

Instead of SVG icons we need for Mac OS X icons for Retina display.

Hi,

Windows 7, OpenGL off, fresh install.

I have the same problem on two different laptops.
Both Windows 7, I try OpenGL on and off but results are the same.

Hat off to the developers and all the users who file bug reports. Very impressive.

BTW, I watched a video once upon a time which showed the nav station of Banque Pop and it looked like there were two laptops running MS Windows and OpenCPN. Can anyone confirm that Banque Pop ran OpenCPN?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.2 Released

Awesome work everybody!!Many Thanks!!!!!

Two questions too. I could not find the ocpn draw plugin on the download page.Used the last one from "thingies"seems to work and is a really great feature.
Maybe add it to download?

Second question, I use win 10 and Thunderbird as email client.I set TB as default email application but ocpn fails to open it when requesting a grib.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again!!!! Great job!!!

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.2 Released

Dave:
I just tried to pull from git Version 4.2 with this command which is specified on the Downloads website:
git clone -b v4.2.x https://github.com/OpenCPN/OpenCPN.git

The results are:
Cloning into 'OpenCPN'...
fatal: Remote branch v4.2.x not found in upstream origin

There is no 4.2 branch at Github.

I also just built O using the Master branch which identifies itself as 4.2 and the "make install" fails because it is missing a file in /data/gshhs/ called poly-l-1.dat.

My script downloads the zip file:
GshhsHiRes.zip
from:
wget http://opencpn.org/ocpn/downloads/data/GshhsHiRes.zip
and unzips it to the /data/gshhs folder in the OpenCPN_Master folder before it builds O.

This has been working just fine up until today.

What have I done wrong?

Thanks,
Freddie

re:
Grib file particle display on Win7.

I found that with this particular GRIB file, the particle density needs to be increased to 7 or 8 to make particle display persistent and repeatable.

This minimum usable density factor is related to the grid size parameters of the GRIB file. Maybe we could automatically preset the density as a new file is loaded....

Anyway, I guess this could be called a bug, and is worth a mention in the Flyspray bug tracker for OCPN 4.2.

Thanks
