Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Hi guys.
installed V4 on Samsung Ultrabook, WIN 8.1, OK, only small problem is when I zoom in eventually the chart looks different from what it did before: all writing and contours are enlarged.
I looked in the settings, but cannot fix it. See screenshot.

Also, if I turn OC off and restart it, it looses the GPS and I have to go into 'Connection' and re-apply the existing GPS connection.

You have over "over zoomed". I think there are tool options that affect this; but don't eliminate it entirely.

Thank you wdkester, I am aware of that, I have been using OC for 5y, but the 3.2.2 version did not behave like this.

Thank you Pavel, I fixed it.

Any clues on why my GPS needs re-finding at every start up?

Stefano...
I really don't know what the problem on your particular machine is. What does the logfile say?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Stefano..
There are two of your connections using COM5. Either use COM5 for the AIS(?) at 38400 or a GPS(?) at 4800. Don't try to connect two different things to one port.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

I know that that port 5 is used by both, but it is not my choice.
I only plug the AIS or the GPS in the USB port, Windows chooses the port number.
OpC remembers both.
There was a time I had 7 or 8 ports saved, but OpC would automatically find whatever port was active at startup. Now it gets confused.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Stefano...
You can't do it like this. The port can't be active with two different speeds at the same time. That it ever worked somehow was pure miracle.

Well, actually it is, and do trust Pavel. OCPN will never pick a port BUT when you choose a port OCPN will present a list of available port for you to choose from and remember that next time, that's correct.
The reason why a port can change over time is more a Windows behavior. Windows has the control of what COM port a particular gadget is given and as you later connect one or another serial USB thing Windows can more or less randomly change its list.
The easiest way to sort this out is to connect one USB and check in Windows "Device manager" what com port number that gadget on that USB port is given. Then use that one in OCPN, and so on for the rest of your USBs.
Don't forget to use 38400 baud rate for the AIS.
AND.......If you later disconnect your PC from the USB ports remember to put all cables in the same USB next time. Otherwise Windows can get the idea to change the COM number.
If you for some reason want to change a given COM port number see for example here: How to change the COM port for a USB Serial adapter on Windows 7 | Plugable

Good luck

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Hakan and Pavel,

My setup is such that I never plug two GPSs in the computer, it is either the 'mouse' GPS for day to day roaming around or the AIS for night-time and longer crossings.
They normally go into the same USB port. Windows assigns the number.

When I start OpC if the port is not recognized, I go into the settings and add it.
That's how I ended up with 6~7 ports at some stage.
Is there a way to force Win8.1 to 'remember' the device and assign the same port No?

Today, I looked in device manager and the screenshot shows what was there (USB GPS), not sure why I have so many Bluetooth ports as my laptop has only one Bluetooth........
However, the speed was set at 38400, even though it should have been 4800, so I changed it.

I then went into OpC and deleted the redundant ports, shut it down and at restart "Voilá" it found the port.

Thank you guys for your patience helping me.

One more thing: I tried to 'print' the Help manual, but it printed (to PDF) without pictures. Is there a downloadable PDF help file out there somewhere?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Stefano..
Good you succeed to connect again.
Just for a print out test I opened the OCPN inbound manual and printed it to a PDF file. No problem and pictures are there.
I use Firefox and print to "PDFCreator" and the result is a nice PDF.
Now I'm on WinXP and are not familiar with Win 8.1. "Old fashion" but working!

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Hi there guys,

I'm a happy user of OpenCPN and use it for months to do weather routing with the Volvo Ocean Race 14-15. But in the past days, the weather routing module did not want to calculate towards Cape Horn, but instead went straight to Chile and then fails. I have tried various GRIB files from different models, with different start and ending points, checked all constraints on the weather routing 5 times and played around with them. I did some trial and error, and found out that the route module does not want to calculate directly across 90 West. See the screen shot. Any help appreciated!
