OpenCPN Version 3.2 Planning

Hello testers and coders!

Break time is over. Back to work, ye scurvy dogs....

We are planning the feature set and release date of OpenCPN Version 3.2, and we need some input.

The Feature Request thread on this Forum is of course huge. The Flyspray Feature Request tasklist contains 188 items. It is pretty much impossible to prioritize these lists without some input regarding the universality of features desired, and then some notion of impact or difficulty of execution.

Here is what we are planning so far:

1. Release Date: Mid September, 2012
2. Incremental bug-fixes, as they appear.
3. Revamped GUI to allow user selectable Icon sets and layout (i.e. "skinning" of the GUI) In process, thanks to jesperwe and sethdart.
4. Enhanced Tide/Current support, allowing modern digital xtides database support.
5. Enhanced NMEA source selection and redirection/repeating.

That's what we know so far.

So, sharpen up your pencils and bring to this forum your wishlist of the two or three most desired Features, with your own use scenario in mind.

Think of this as a "Virtual focus group". I'd rather hear "I would like to see...." than "I think people would like to see..."

Looking forward to your input.

Dave

Testers and (potential) coders.

By the way, items 4 and 5 on the list above are "unfunded", meaning that we don't yet have committed developer resources for them.
If you have been thinking about getting your feet wet in O coding, here are some opportunities

Re: OpenCPN Version 3.2 Planning

Hi,

1) Android platform compatibility,

2) AIS crossing situation forecast (a'la Vesper Marine WatchMate),

Many thanks for your work, all the best!

BTW If I had 3 wishes ;-) the last one would be:

3) depth survey functionality with resulting depth/pos file to be used as a layer ...

Dave, if I can make a suggestion to you is the scalng of vessels with a proper interface instead of dong it in the ini file. This is generally the case in most chart programs. This should normally be well appreciated.
Best regards and good luck.

the cross track window,

could the graphic have settable values for the pathway width, or perhaps an automatic one that varies with the distance to the waypoint.

great work, on 3, well done all.

thanks

ORIENTATION OF CHART PRINTING

Could I recommend that all of the printing on Vector Charts should automatically orientate to follow the boat course when in Course-Up and Look-Ahead mode.

I still like to see some more inland navigation features like for example speed displayed in km/h instead of knots, configurable in settings tab.

Keep up the good work!!

Dave, I guess your radar plugin should be in that list, no?

Re: OpenCPN Version 3.2 Planning

this has been mentioned before by others. It's growing on me.... if I could just see a route's total miles in the (very nice) "cursor-hover-clip"-as it is now, I only see the leg's length and must needs to open the screen- covering properties dialogue to see the sum length.... so many clicks to in there and out again!

Likewise, Thomas has an idea to double-click a waypoint and have it's link open, without going through the properties dialogue ...

Generally, to just reduce the mouse-clicking perigrinations...

My wishlist:

1. C-Map 93 Edition 3 compatibility

2. Option to display vector line showing opposite tack/gybe angle from vessel

3. Option to display vector line showing true/apparent wind speed/angle/direction

e.g.

I would like the status bar to be adjustable in size (font size) as it is very small on my 9 inch screen. And also to show the time to cursor at current speed. either in the status bar or the dashboard plugin.

When I zoom out the boat icon changes to a target, is there any way of keeping it a boat? so I can see the direction of travel without looking at the compass

I agree with Kestral, I would like all HMI parameters needed to make OCPN work fluent on a 10" screen to be adjustable.

Re: OpenCPN Version 3.2 Planning

hello dave,

I talk of this information for raster maps, the French coast, the SHOM is now selling.
A software publisher sell them in France for 99 euros, the pack, cutting off the coast of France in three parts: neck, Atla, and ntique Méditérrannée.

These cards are certainly encrypted.

It would be nice if these maps could be displayed by OpenCPN.
It would probably negotiate with the SHOM and implement a plug-in.

Re: OpenCPN Version 3.2 Planning

The greatest shortcoming of OCPN is still the unsufficient way of connecting external hardware (GPS, NMEA etc.) depending of the OS used. There are still too many users having trouble with this and needs third party software to be successful (Xport, PolarCOM etc.).
