237. GRIB file selection dialog will be shown/hidden according to the state of the toolbar tool.
KML PlugIn needs modification to make UI similar for all PlugIns.

240. New Hotkeys:
All affecting Vector charts only, and only in Mariners Standard display category.

'R' - Toggle generic "rocks" display, including UWTROC, OBSTRN, and WRECKS
'S' - Toggle SOUNDG display

243. The RouteManagerDialog track tab allows multiple track selection (CTRL + lift click). Selected tracks can be merged using a context menu (Right Click) pick.

246. Ctrl-M places the WP at cursor's position.
Enter places the WP at boat's position.
Space places the WP at boat's position.

251. Developers note: libgps API changed significantly between libgps19 and ..20. We require the libgps20 API and include files to build OpenCPN, and a "version skew" warning will be produced if thay are not found. The libgps interface will not function correctly if OpenCPN is built with libgps19 include files.

253. New hotkeys: 'T' Toggle ENC text
'O' Toggle chart outlines

255. Opinions solicited. Are the rendered lines too heavy, or too light on your hardware?
256. Please take a look at the toolbox->Help tab, and review the embedded help files and images. Comments appreciated.

Overall status:

This Beta Release should be considered to be a Release Candidate.
In our context, this means that features are frozen, and all show-stopping bugs eliminated.

What is left to do, theoretically, is:

1. Update international language translations. (pot files have been updated in this Beta)
2. Finalize embedded documentation (underway).
2. Change the Version name from Beta 2.6.1718 to OpenCPN Version 3.0

one can hope.....

Anyway, time for translation updates. Send them to me directly, please. That will be a much more reliable way of ensuring that they make it into the Release.

In the home-stretch....

Thanks, and enjoy
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1718

A bit more on the user selectable fonts:

It is now possible to select what font is used for text on vector charts. There is a new category on the Languages/Fonts tab of the ToolBox window, called ChartTexts. Here you select what face to use, and a template size. Weight and final size of the displayed texts depends on the chart you are using, but if the charts contain various weights and sizes, they will all scale together depending on what size you select.

Tip: There are several modern typefaces specifically designed for good readability in small sizes on computer screens. If you download and install one of these you may improve readability compared to the current default font. For example, Droid Sans (available here: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/Droid-Sans) is a good alternative.

Here is an example using Droid Sans at 10 points:

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1718

I guess this release is an end of the line again for Debian stable (Squeeze), since it comes with libgps19.

A had a brief happy moment since rel. 2.6.1612, I could compile opencpn in debian again after a long time.

I wish there were options for those of us who do not want to be on the bleeding edge of libraries. Not that I'm ungrateful for all the achievements.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1718

dpons....

OCPN runs just fine with libgps19.

Some small changes would allow compilation on libgps19, although that would break libgps20. This is just what one would expect, since libgps19 could have had no idea what libgps20 was going to look like.

If you feel inclined, you might join me in mentioning to gpsd developers that a moving ABI target is very hard to work with....

Thanks

Thanks Dave , Il'll try that. I would not hold my breath regarding API's. On my own code I never obsoletize api's, but not everyone thinks the same way. While I have not looked at the opencpn code (I would if I had any free time), perhaps a few #ifdefs could handle the differences.

Meanwhile, I'm fairly happy with the 1705 beta.

Thanks for great beta! I am seeing More and Clearer soundings on my cm93! (at scale 103500) and where they used to be very dim.

(Note to self...delete stationmru.dat before switching tides if the Harmonic is a really different format)

Yes this is an effect of my work with chart symbols. As we now can use alpha blending for soundings they will come out much better on darker/shallower backgrounds, since the soundings now change color with the background (a bit).

That sounds very strange. If you do, what tabs do you actually have in your toolbox?

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1718

*buntu testers...
With this version we start to publicly experiment with our own PPA on Launchpad, which will allow us to distribute the packages in a more standard way through the Ubuntu Software Center, do the builds on the same infrastructure where Ubuntu itself is built for all the available releases and deliver updates to you through the normal package update process.
I have never used it until about 48 hours ago, so please pardon me if everything will not be perfect from the beginning...
Until the final release of OpenCPN 3.0 the packages will live in my private archive at https://launchpad.net/~nohal/+archive/opencpn and, if everything goes well, with the final release we will announce the permanent PPA where they will be available.
Please give these packages a go and get back to me if you observe any misbehavior or problems during the installation or usage. I'm especially interested in results of testing with GPSD/LibGPS as I can't simulate it properly in my totally virtual environments.

All the i386 builds are already done, but the amd64 build queue is a bit full, so the 64-bit packages for all the Ubuntu versions should be ready in between 1 and 2 hours from now.

How to add the PPA to your system:

Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04)
System -> Administration -> Software Sources
- Other Software - Add...
Add lucidbleed PPA - Instructions to do so at https://launchpad.net/~lucid-bleed/+archive/ppa
Add opencpn PPA - Instructions to do so at https://launchpad.net/~nohal/+archive/opencpn
Install using synaptic or apt-get / Update as any other software

Maverick (Ubuntu 10.10)
System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
- Settings -> Repositories
Enable universe
Other Software - Add...
Add opencpn PPA - https://launchpad.net/~nohal/+archive/opencpn
Install using synaptic or apt-get / Update as any other software

Natty (Ubuntu 11.04)
Don't have this one available myself
Launchpad has a problem with 32-bit package build, amd64 looks OK. If anybody is actually affected, let me know. The way to add the PPA should be something between what it is in 10.10 and 11.10...

Oneiric (Ubuntu 11.10)
Ubuntu Software Center
- Edit -> Software Sources
Enable universe (On Ubuntu Software tab, check Community-maintained Open Source Software (universe))
Other Software - Add...
Add opencpn PPA - Instructions to do so at https://launchpad.net/~nohal/+archive/opencpn

Precise (Ubuntu 12.04)
Ubuntu Software Center
- Edit -> Software Sources
Enable universe (On Ubuntu Software tab, check Community-maintained Open Source Software (universe))
Other Software - Add...
Add opencpn PPA - Instructions to do so at https://launchpad.net/~nohal/+archive/opencpn

Quantal (future Ubuntu 12.10)
Not even I am brave enough to try this version, but we already have packages for it

Problems that you could face
In case opencpn package is not visible in the Ubuntu Software Center after you added the PPA (very likely it will not until you update the package list or your scheduled automatic update happens)
Close Ubuntu Software Center
In Terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
or go to Software Update and hit Check button to force refresh of the package list

In case of problems with the PPA key not available after you add the PPA:
Close Ubuntu Software Center and start Terminal
Code:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 9C18FD9F
sudo apt-key update

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1718

...here's something I never noticed before but it is definitely the case here today, and, it applies to 2.6 betas and even 2.5.

If you have Xport running , and O isset up to accept Xport's virtual port and that port is enabled in Xport, and NO gps is actually plugged in , there's no nag message on start up!

Got it now - I expected a new category within the Language/Font tab and did not find the entry in the Font Options drop down list.

OK, good. I clarified the text a bit in the release notes.
