Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1227

P_dub,no I don't have anything that'll do that..but l@@k what O can do!

three different boat icons on three different views at once! The gps would work via Xport and you need OpenCpn running portably as copies from different paths...

Happy, I dont think you did understood what I sended.
Look in the CM93 program if you have (the confg files), you will see that it is a must to do that.
Best Regards.

I support this request... BUT some German speaking sailor might also ask the German hydro office to correct their grib format as Zygrib also fails to read these charts. Airmail Viewfax does succeed to an extent (no data displayed when mousing over)

Hello,
Here You can find some grib viewers:
http://sailingweatheronline.com/software.html

Some skippers use maxsea software for navigation and grib
display. It shows these german currennts gribs (and others) correctly.
You can find maxsea viewer here:
http://www.ziltmagazine.com/software...er_v10.4.1.exe
Full softwar is expensive.
I do not know if my request to German Hydro Office
will make any sense for them.
Can you show me please some currents grib that works ok
with ocpn?
I like OpenCPN and I will use it anyway.
greetings
Andrew

P_dub,I don't own any program that allows adjusting the (gps?)antenna position....
Except O,of course, because it's easy to make an ownship icon for OpenCPN that is centered around any particular place on the vessel....For two gps locations on a ship or tug,I'm not sure how I'd do that ..yet.

In Nobeltec you put in two offsets to alter the GPS position on the boat. It shows on you icon as a little square box. Mine shows on the right side of the boat about halfway back.

For a boat as small as mine, I don't think it is really necessary.

Happy Seagull
I have and did use for a while Nobetec Admiral, Orca master of 7Cs, Transas, 3D Navigator, Boat Cruiser of Navsim, etc... and many others with temporary permits for the rest... and all do the adjustment for antenna and size of vessel. Unfortuately the one that seems to be more aceptable and low cost does not do it. This is sad as there seems to be no interrest for it.
Best Regards for the Year 2012.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1227

P_Dub,

my sensation is that Happy questions if scaling is useful in situations that are not just harbor or very narrow stretches.
The example about fishing spots is interesting of course.

My experience from topographical high grade GPS receivers without differential correction is that we can come down to a precision of perhaps 1.8m.
The systems in our boats are usually worse but an error 1.5m - 2.5m in 80% of time might be achievable. Obviously with 20% of time with worse data I wouldn't want an automatic system to put me into the marina....

Just as a spotlight: AIS transponders require the relative position of the GPS antenna in relation to the center of the ship. If this is helpful on a 12x3,5m vessel (and you can input just plain meters for relative antenna position) is a different question.

Please don't take the discussion as "nobody is interested". The developers are listening to the requests, doubts and proposals.

If the technology permit it, why not use it properly. For 45 years I was sailing and only for about the last 10, it has been acceptable. Prior to that there were numerous errors either in the system or in the charts making. So, if it permit a more acceptable accuracy, I see nothig wrong by using it, by experience peoples. Never to forget, that there is nothing wrong by looking through the window in front of you.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1227

...What I'm suggesting is: ...Two or more separate versions of BETA 2.6 OpenCPN-Portable,each with their own sized "ownship" and whatever other particular settings suit the situation and charts you are loading...there's the "I'm-Fishing-with-DGPS-enabled", "I'm-Tying-up-My- ContainerShip",I'm-littleBoat-in-a million-AIS-targets", "I'm Singlehanded-sailing-at-Night-wearing-Gloves" versions....

Start the version or versions (concurrent) you need.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1227

Happy,

That is not a bad idea. But to take it one step further, why not add a feature to allow manual own-ship size selection. I'm not talking about real scaling. Just the ability to select from maybe 5 or so predefined or user defined sizes. Since it is already possible to edit the own-ship icon file it should not be a lot of effort to implement this feature. Just a thought.

BTW, I think that the own-ship scheme is fine the way it is currently implemented. But my use of OpenCPN is as an aid to navigation. The own-ship icon serves as an easy way to find my position on the display and generally what direction I'm headed. Due to chart and GPS errors I would never consider using it to keep from bumping into things at close quarters.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1227

what I wanted to say with my article

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f134/opencpn-version-2-6-beta-build-1223-a-73613-3.html#post848525

is, that I find the symbol X far to discrete and small for the sort of danger it can represent.
could the symbol be replaced by an other symbol , more flashy and noticable ?

and why is the depht 2,1m of the underwaterrock only shown when I look at the object query ?

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1227

Rik...
this symbol and the way it's displayed is defined in ECDIS standard we are following. If you don't like it, it's pretty easy to change - go to OpenCPN - Rasterization Rules Editor - Redmine and download the editor. Then edit the symbol to suit your liking.

I agree with Rik, not sure what ECDIS says but it would be wonderful to see the shallow depth from obstacles on the main chart view

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.6 Beta Build 1227

I'd love to help you guys but until some kind soul does whatever has to be done to the BSB4 plugin I can't use my Canadian charts. And at least until the end of February we expect to be only in Canadian waters.
