Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Release Candidate 714

Zoef....

Checking on your crash now. I think I see the problem.

Just to confirm the scenario:

At the time you zoomed in, and caused the crash, were the following true?

1. Currently showing cm93....
and
2. There were other ENC's available in the chart bar (i,e, green bars)

Do those other ENC's (if present) open and display correctly?

Any other information you can provide would be useful.
Maybe a screenshot of your recollection of the scenario?

Thanks
Dave

Just wondering.....

Dave,

Please go on wondering. After moving the cm93 files from the F partition (the slowest part of the drive) to the C partition I don't have any more the crashes on zooming in I announced yesterday. One problem solved. Thank you.

1 Yes
2 Yes
3 Yes, other ENC's (smaller) display correctly
4 Screenshot http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35040940/OpenCPN.jpg

The screenshot is of today; both the CM93 and the ENC Totaal files are on the C drive. For PC spec see my first posting on this subject. I still have the feeling that one way or another the amount of ram used or made available to OpenCPN is throttled.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Release Candidate 714

Dave, Thomas:
2.4 improves if I move the charts to a local drive: it's still ridiculously slow but it improves. 2.3 does not.
As I mentioned in my previous post, if I enable quilting everything will work fine: the problem is with the chart borders, which only show up if quilting is disabled. Quilting therefore cannot be the culprit, unless there's some programming choice I'm missing.
There is something else I will offer: I have not yet tested the new releases with a laptop, but it is my belief that if this kind of network drive is an issue, a laptop drive will be an outright catastrophe.

ifabio....

One more question:

What kind of drive is the %ProgramData\opencpn\cm93 directory resident on?

This is the dir that will be hit hardest on chart outline rendering. The outlines are actually cached here after being rendered once, at anytime in the past. The cm93 charts are not directly accessed to render outlines after the first time.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Release Candidate 714

Programdata is on the system drive, I did not move it. So it's on a WD Raptor.
Y: is a network drive on a big, fat NAS. It saturates gigabit ethernet easily and is designed for a 150 workstation workload - I have four running off of it.
Things being as you say, I honestly don't understand what's going on, because the location of the chart data 'should not' make a difference, yet it does - unless I remove the outlines, in which case everything is fine. So it's behaving the opposite way of what I would expect.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Release Candidate 714

What OS are you running on. To me its sounds more of an OS networking issue then one related to OpenCPN....My guess its its a windows network.

If you have the ability it would be interesting to test on pure linux box. By pure I mean not run in emulation on a windows machine to determine if the behaviour is consistent.

Sailias, rest assured, if the network drive were the issue, I'd have much bigger problems than openCPN. It handles anything else I throw at it - including, by the by, opencpn 1.3.6 (!!!) without issue. The OS, for reference, is varied: XP/32 , XP/64 and Win7/64 all have the same symptoms.

I just like to delete an obvious thing from the "list" of possible causes.
Do you have a CM93 directory, in the same directory where your .ini file is ?
Is it non empty?

My concern is not with the physical drive, rather with the TCP/IP stacks as its implement in windows variants.

regards and best of luck sorting it out.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Release Candidate 714

Ifabio....

This is puzzling.
What I don't understand is how you have the same effect on multiple machines.

I anyone else having this performance problem in:
a. Single chart cm93 mode
b. with chart outlines "ON"
c. Anywhere, but specifically Dalmatia
??

By "problem", I think we mean "multi-second" pan times.

And, does anyone see a marked difference between chart outlines "ON" and "OFF"?

I see from your screenshot that you have a large monitor. So, performance should generally reduce linearly by the pixel count (i.e. square of monitor nominal size).

But there seems to be more going on here that we don't understand.

I would appreciate other user's comment regarding this scenario.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Release Candidate 714

Dave,
Not sure what single chart mode is,but I haven't any charts of Dalmatia so there's nothing on deck except CM93.( mine are old version too)
And I'm in a rush too,heading out.
but
actually,I might...although it's not the outlines on/off that make any difference....Just holding down arrow keys(tapping repeatedly doesn't fail),sometimes the cm93 will stop moving.I release, tap and hold an arrow key again and O pans again....might have something to do with the degree of detail available...ie:slows over harbours or where other scales available?
When o stops, it helps to click the window again,as though the window had lost focus....(but it hasn't)

Zooming in+out fast with keyboard(but only "held-down" -/+) might also be a clue.Would the difference between "tapping" and "hold-down" behaviour be a clue?(this in XP)

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Release Candidate 714

Happy....

Thanks for the feedback.

Single chart mode is the internal name for "non-quilted"

You have Dalmatia in cm93. See the screenshot in
OpenCPN 2.3.x Much Slower than 1.3.6?
