New 136rc1226 MSI
Hi again....
I have updated the opecpn136rc1226.MSI (installer) file to correct the above bug. No change to opencpn.exe code itself....
http://www.southbaynetwork.com/openc...n136rc1226.msi
So, if you are reading this, it should be OK to download and install opencpn136rc1226.msi WITHOUT deleting the existing opencpn.exe.
If you are confused by all this, just download again and give it a try.
Reports are welcome.....
Thanks
Dave

During chart builds, the tool bar icons are grayed out, except for the grib icon.
Good performance on chart list builds:
This is no problem, but just some stats for your entertainment and so you know how it performs on a particular setup.
Win7 64bit-AMD quad - 6gig - 22GB of charts - affinity changed to all 4 CPUs
Armchair only - no GPS, AIS or grib files.
Directory structure:
C:\charts
Subdirectories for various locations and types. Includes: BSB_ROOT - US raster
ENC_ROOT - US vector
cm93 - Uh - that'd be cm93s
terraserver - over 1000 custom raster photos
newzealand - the rasters from Marco
SENC - the .ini has been modified so OCPN puts the S57s here
And 15 others - various countries ENC charts, and a few of raster charts Chart Build Performance: Build specifying just C:\charts\cm93 - less than 1 second. Build specifying C:\charts
BSB -------- 2 minutes -- 5 seconds
ENC -------- 1 minute -- 38 seconds
S57 -------- 0 minutes - 38 seconds
cm93 ------------------- <1 second
Total time - 4 minutes - 21 seconds
Specifying each directory individually and letting it do an update in btween each seems to add up to about the total time, so it all appears to work as desired.
Interestingly enough, when I deleted all the individual directories and then added the root directory, the resulting update was less than 5 seconds. Forcing an entire rebuild was the expected 4+ minutes.

Is this to say that I should dump EVERY chart I have, regardless of type and location into "C:\charts" ?
Just getting started.
Thanks,
Extemp.

Charts
Extemporaneous...
Welcome aboard.
It is safe and reasonably efficient to put all your charts EXCEPT cm93 database in one large directory, and set that directory in Toolbox->Charts.
However, if you do a lot of chart downloads, updates, etc., then it will be faster to break the charts folder into smaller groups, and specify them individually in the Toolbox->Charts dialog.
Reason: When you visit the Toolbox->Charts tab, opencpn scans each directory in the list, looking for updated charts to re-install. He knows by checksum/hash calculation if a directory has not changed in any way, so that that directory's charts may be safely skipped in the scan. So, splitting the chart tree gives opencpn more opportunities to skip chart scanning, and is thus faster.
cm93 is a different beast. The cm93 data structure contains over 20,000(!!) separate files, each of which may need to be loaded for scan. However, if the cm93 database is specified as a separate directory in Toolbox->Charts, then opencpn will detect that this dir is the root of a cm93 database, and elect not to scan all file as an optimization. Much faster.... He cannot make this detection if the cm93 root is mixed in with all other charts. He has to assume that charts may be anywhere in the tree. Very slow....
I hope this clarifies the situation somewhat.
Dave

I loaded the new release from http://www.southbaynetwork.com/openc...n136rc1226.msi.
Got not errors during the install.
The About shows 1.3.5 1222. Checked the file size of opencpn.exe and got 4,986 KB with a date of 12/22/2009.
wvsdata and lang folder have the 12/26/2009 date.
I tried renaming opencpn.exe to opencpnold.exe.
Did the down load from the above and got a message "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel."
Created a subdirectory called old. Moved the opencpnold.exe to that directory.
Downloaded the the MSI and got the same message.

Hi.
I have the same problem as gmau #349 running on Vista.
It seems the only option to try again is to de-install the last version, but then I will loose all my pre-sets. No wind barbs or speed showing in the European gribs.

Now I'm in real trouble... I used the MS control panel to de-install the latest downloaded version. Received an error message and the question "Do you want to de-install?" to which I answered yes. Trying then to install the downloaded version a second time,I received the message:"already installed, try alteration or de-installation via the control panel" Luckily I still seem to have the old ver. 1222 installed and working.
What do I do to try installing the new version I downloaded AGAIN this morning?

Hi Sinbad7,
I had problems uninstalling a program once and had success with this Installer clean-up tool from Microsoft. You might give it a try.... It does more than just its own programs. In particular msi installed programs...
Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003

Pete..
Thanks for the tip. I downloaded the utility but I am very hesitant using it,as it MAY require re-installation of many or ALL programs previously installed using the Microsoft Installer.

Hi Sinbad7,
