OpenCPN Runs on Embedded ARM

Now that I have a Opencpn chartplotting program and linux on ARM, I'd like to completely dump windows overboard. But... I can't loose it without loosing Winlink email and Gribs with it. Is there a working decent way to access winlink and Gribs using linux on ARM? Paclink doesn't work yet does it?

I'm looking to solve the same problem.

It is unclear to me if the Paclink software is working or not; It has been downloaded 35 times in the past week! But no changes have been made since 2010.

I'm using Zygrib to download the grib files under Linux/Xinutop and thn use the downloaded grib file with OpenCpn - works fine under linux ( intel) Might also run arm ??

Am I missing something... will zygrib download gribs and weather stuff over SSB?

Folks, I just wanted to make it clear, I'm not hi-jacking this thread from Opencpn ARM to Winlink for ARM, but just pointing out the exponential plus having both Opencpn and SSB mail/weather access would be on an ARM based system would be. From what I could see from the paclink information on the web, quit a bit of development was done to the point were it works on a raspberry pi if you do a lot of tweaking (we know whats that's like with opencpn) but nobody has fixed all the bugs or tied it all together. Feels like the heavy lifting has been done but it needs somebody to dedicate some TOC to the project. This project is not so Graphics oriented like Opencpn. The person to do something like this might be somebody who is into cruising, programing linux, and is a HAM radio operator.

Are most people using Cubian or Linaro Lubuntu on their Cubieboards and if you are using either are you booting from SD or nand?

I have two CubieTrucks with SATA SSD's and I use Qbee-X (Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS) for one and Aruntu 1.001 (Ubuntu 13.10) for the other. These distributions are the best (in my opinion) because they seem to be the easiest to get OpenGL-ES2 working on. They also both will play 1080p movies as well. They seem to be very stable.
I also have a script to do all the heavy lifting of installing OpenGL-ES2, Opencpn, and most of the plugins.
I do not recommend using a SD card in the long run because they have a definite life span and its not very long under heavy usage. They are also just another weak link in the chain of workings because of the rather weak connection point to the PWB. After all a SD card is supposed to be a temporary connection.

Love to see those scripts. I like Ubuntu, but I noticed that Cubian X has just appeared and there is instructions on how to install it on Cubian on a Cubieboard 2... What I have noticed is that Cubian X is noticeably slower than Lubuntu and the package repositories don't seem as complete... I'm Running Linaro Lubuntu on one card and it screams. Really nice stable build. Tried Cubian and the directions to install on the opencpn site and couldn't get the libGL.so.1 to work right. What I'm afraid of is that everything will go the Cubian way instead of Ubuntu and I'll be left pulling my hair out trying to get GL working. That's why I asked whether there is a standard OS yet.

I tried Cubian X and also did not like it at all. Had all kinds of problems trying to get OpenGL-ES2 to work, so I abandoned the effort.

I got a CubieTruck today and was able to install OpenCPN in a few hours.

Started with CubianX.

Followed the instructions from the deveopers manual, but there were some problems with those instructions:

1/ The downloaded Image now expands the file system automatically on startup.

2/ Copying the files made by GLshim to the specified locations did not improve performance of glxgears test. The best advice seemed to be to run glxgears with the ldd command to find out where it was getting these files from. Perhaps there is a better way ? Once I copied the files over the ones specified by ldd glxgears went to 60 or more (was 45 before files overwritten).

3/ I had to run make install using sudo or it could not create the OpenCPN directories.

The solutions to all the problems I had were in this thread, but difficult (time consuming) to find.

How can the Manual get updated ?

I'm getting a bunch of warnings on the command line while OpenCPN is running (CubianX on CubieTruck). Are they important ?

It seems to work very well, as fast as my old desktop.

I did experience one hangup while building the chart cache, no chance to send error report, also seems to happen under windows.
