Hello Dave,

Just a proposal to make life easier for translators, and avoid unnecessary conflicts between translations starting with the same letter in the menu bar.

You may number the items:
1: Navigate,
2: View,
3: Tools,
4: Help.

Thus, the translators leave the numbers, and could put any word as a translation. So even words beginning with the same letter eventually.

Hello Dave, Hello AnyOne

On a marine maps S57 SHOM, when I use the keyboard shortcut "s" or "S", the soundings are displayed or hidden. This is normal.

I also charts Inland S57 Netherlands. When I use the same keyboard shortcuts "s" or "S", no sounding is displayed. Is this normal?

There are no soundings on Inland S57... so this is normal indeed.

The ENC charts of the South West Delta area of the Netherlands are available in the highest resolution (6) with very detailed depth information. The other free Charts of the Inland Waterways are not yet with the depth soundings.

The Belgium part of the Wester Scheldt is also available in high resolution.

OpenCPN is working perfect with these ENC charts.

RANGE DIAGRAMS FOR NEXT WAYPOINT Third Draft

Setting Options | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Advance route waypoint on arrival only.
Routes are explained in Marks and Routes. With an active route, the Dialog "This Leg" is visible near the upper right corner of the screen.
RNG(actual range) Distance to the next waypoint.
NR (normal range) Distance from destination waypoint to line orthagonal to current route segment which passes through ownship.

(Diagram needed - Need to create this diagram next)

NR alternative description: Mark the point on the current route equal to ships current "distance made good" towards the destination waypoint. The distance from this point to the destination waypoint is the "normal range". (See diagram for Distance made good, the horizontal dashed line from the bow crossing the current route.)

The actual range RNG is always equal to or greater than the normal range NR. When the difference is greater than 10% both values are shown in "RNG"


The "normal" range is the second number shown. 1.88 in this case.

When following a Route OpenCPN normally decides to advance to the next waypoint if at least one of the following two conditions apply.
  1. NR (normal range) is less than the declared arrival radius.
  2. RNG (actual range) is increasing for 2 seconds. Ownship is moving away from the target waypoint, and has been for more than two seconds.

With Advance route waypoint on arrival only activated, OpenCPN only advances the route to the next waypoint, if:
  1. Condition 1 above is true.
  2. Condition 2 is ignored.
(See Diagram 3 and Diagram 4)

(I do not understand this text. Please review the Diagrams above. Is there some other condition? Do we need another diagram?)


This feature is useful when sailing and you can't lay the next mark and are forced to tack a few times to reach it. It allows a ship to move away from waypoint without automatically advancing to next waypoint.
This ensures that the next waypoint stays active until you either reach it, or you reach a line through it, which is perpendicular from the marked route.
In the latter case you have a cross track error greater than the arrival radius.

(This text could also be made clearer and related to the diagrams above)
On the other hand....
Option 2 helps you if you really want to cut a corner by a large distance, in such a way that the "normal range" will never be less than {arrival radius}. We want to automatically advance the route in this case.

These diagrams represent several conditions:
1. RNG =NR and XTE=0 (Boat is on the route)
2. RNG and NR are different. XTE>0 (Boat is off the route)
This corresponds to bdcat 10% difference between NR and RNG.
Also these conditions
1. Waypoint Advance (normal).
2. Advance Waypoint upon Arrival only.

I've added these diagrams and changed some of the text to make it clearer, in doing so, I realized that Diagrams 1 and 2 incorrectly show BOTH conditions being meet, when only one of the conditions needs to be met for Waypoint Arrival (default) to progress to the next WP.

These diagrams are going to get more complex as a result, showing change to WP03 twice and two light green turning boats.

I will have to make these changes later.

@ Rick ...ok I got interested enough to start 4 or 5 programs and try to draw as comprehension aid.... I can't try it aboard right now so the all-important fine points have yet to crawl from their slimy rocks ...that is the crux of it-someone must try this!!! however... blue rings being wpts arrival radius

I can see looking at the drawing that it'd be better if the closest approach to the second wpt was also shown per the assumed track Also, there's no way I'd cover that example distance in the 2 seconds...which is awfully quick by the way, I think...
My brain hurts.

Can someone else confirm this oddity?

I notice that all the charts are NAD83. It occurs at many zoom levels. I've run CCleaner.

The following was subimitted against the previous release.

"I wouldn't call this a bug, but the quilting S/W sort of hiccups while panning down the NY state barge canal.

I'm at chart 14786_59, zoomed to scale= 15800, the next chart (_60) appears in the chart bar but isn't quilted. (EC1)

If you left click the chart bar (2nd chart from the left) to see its contents, chart _60 will be displayed quilted with _59 properly.

If you don't click the chart bar, and drag it a little further west, it will display a strange quilt. (EC2)

Drag it a little bit further and it will _59 disappears and _60 is dispalyed.

OpenGL off or on is the same. Chart Look Ahead doesn't have any effect"

@Rick ... I think those drawings you made are pretty good! I am getting it now! They show both cases where each option (on arrival only) and without are shown pros and cons....I am still wondering per XTE and " 2 seconds" but likely don't matter without trying it.

Changed the diagrams, there were some misspellings too.
To reflect the OR condition for Waypoint Advance (normal default).

For some reason this seems pretty tight to be and I don't know why BOTH conditions are required. However in small boat racing, if you take the mark by more than a 20' radius, you've automatically lost.

Please slow down a little bit! Consider that the documentation must be 4.0 ready, basically at all times. The final version is soon to be pulled. Don't put comments like
