OpenCPN Release 4.2/4.4 Final test

Ahoy, OpenCPN'ers...

We are just about ready to release the much-anticipated maintenance update to OpenCPN V4.2.

Since we added the new GRIBv2 support, arguably a new Feature, this Released version will be called OpenCPN V4.4.0.

The final images are available now in the Beta section of the opencpn.org website. I request that interested testers download these images as a quick "smoke test", just to verify good builds and uploads. I especially want to confirm the armhf build of OpenCPN on the various linux base systems.

A special note for linux users:
The ppa for Beta tests has changed. Then new ppa is at

https://launchpad.net/~bdbcat/+archive/ubuntu/opencpn

Due to some inconvenient requirements of the Ubuntu launchpad system, the Version number for this Beta will be 4.4.3. Unfortunately, this means that if you later want to install the "official" Release from the "Release ppa", you will need to remove the Beta package so that the Release 4.4.0 will install. Otherwise, it looks like a downgrade, since 4.4.0 is "less than" 4.4.3. Sigh...

I expect to finalize the 4.4.0 Release in a couple of days.

Thanks for your support and feedback.

Re: OpenCPN Release 4.2/4.4 Final test

bdbcat, sean's most recent weather_routing (just tested) is not working for windows. no isobars are written, and the routing fails. I have not been able to determine if this is due to weather_routing or due to grib_pi. I believe the weather_routing plugin does work in linux, so perhaps that is an indication that grib_pi is ok, but I really do not know how to check this.
https://github.com/seandepagnier/wea...g_pi/issues/40

This has been around for awhile so go to the bottom. Pavel's fork which is a number of commits behind does work in v4.2.0 and v4.2.1704 I have not tested it in v4.2.1

Since you are releasing, I thought you might want to know.

Rick,

Don't worry about the plugin because it is not in sync with the core release and could be fixed later. For me it works fine anyway, but I will investigate more soon.

Re: OpenCPN Release 4.2/4.4 Final test

Hello Dave,

I had an old EeePC netbook I had with Ubuntu 14. Alas, it stopped working. So I had more spare PC. My wife has a Microsoft tablet under W10, but without GPS, we installed OpenCPN 42 and 44 today.
With only charts CM93 and those of Sweden Soltek. Strangely, I can not operate the NV-Verlag dongle on this tablet.

I used the USB port on this tablet to bring GPS data by exploiting an old GPS GlobalSat ND100 (proplific chip). GPS is well recognized by OpenCPN.

Both versions of OpenCPN working on this tablet. However, when I click on a chart in the bar charts, all rectangles of the bar charts become black.

Tomorrow I will sail with our two machines for further testing.

Works great on my Raspberry P2 and 3 and on my Linux Mint 64 bits system.

Thanks for this fine piece of software.

Re: OpenCPN Release 4.2/4.4 Final test

Dave

I installed and ran 4.4.0 on W10 without any problem.

Then I tried to install 4.4.3 on a xubuntu 16.04 from the ppa
I am not at ease with Linux and particularly with PPAs.

First I typed " sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bdbcat/ubuntu/opencpn"
the result was OK
then I typed "sudo apt-get update"
the result was once more OK
then I typed "sudo apt-get install opencpn"
This time I got these error messages ( sorry it's in French) :
//
jeanpierre@jeanpierre-Compaq-Presario-CQ60-Notebook-PC:~$ sudo apt-get install opencpn

Re: OpenCPN Release 4.2/4.4 Final test

Why the PPA change? Should we remove the old repository for betas? Is there any reason not to remove the old repository? I updated the manual at Ubuntu PPA | Official OpenCPN Homepage to reflect the change. Please take a look at it to be sure my changes are correct. The manual packaged with the distribution also needs to be updated to match the online manual. Granted, most people who are trying to figure out how to install OpenCPN on their Linux machine will go to the online manual (if they have access to the included manual they've already installed it, right?) but there may be occasions when someone refers to the included manual and they will need the current information about PPAs. No doubt there are other areas of the manual that have been updated to reflect changes which should also be available with the downloaded package.

So far 4.4.0 looks good on Ubuntu 14.04. I'll try to do more testing shortly.

Tide discrepancies

I was planning my trip for tomorrow and noticed some odd results in the tides for Sydney, Australia. The main tide station is out by 2 and a half hours, but a secondary station nearby is only half an hour out, whereas the official tide chart shows it only 3 minutes difference from Sydney.

The official tide chart shows:
Sydney 08:57, Camp Cove 09:00

OpenCPN shows:
Sydney 11:28, Camp Cove 09:30

Having a quick look at the graphic tide symbols, every other tide station on the coast for the whole state appears to be roughly right.

I'm sorry, I don't know if this is the same in earlier versions and it's too late now to spend time on it. Only reported it now because 4.4.0 is imminent.

This is v 4.2.0 on W7 Pro 32.

This is a good solution. The new Beta PPA does not include the support and data files. For production use, when the release is mode to the "release ppa ( ppa/opencpn/opencpn)", all will be well.

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN Release 4.2/4.4 Final test

A quick response, Rick however I don't see FS#1940 as the same issue unless there is more than the description shows. All these tide stations along the coast are in the same time zone, which is the same as my PC is set to. Only Sydney, the primary station is out by a long margin.

As for FS#1940 which says....

When displaying the tide graph the time displayed seems to be based on the geographic location of the tide station. This often bears no relationship with local time or ship time but is unchangeable within OCPN.

I would like to see it display the time from the PC's timezone and or have an option for UTC so that there is no crazy head gymnastics involved in working out time corrections.

I'm not convinced that would be desirable. I think tides should be displayed showing the time of the time zone they are in.
