Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

Sean,
Interesting. There was definitely a chart error where there was an exception error thrown out just before this started happening. I also saw some chart errors in the logs but that is common place I believe.

We should never need to make notes like this.
Is there some event that could set opengl=0 and the texture cache =0 and automatically clear the texture cache? Maybe that already happens under certain circumstances...If there are two O startups ending with a black blank screen?
But clearing the texture cache is a bad thing for small cpu because it takes hours.

If the texture format changed and the magic byte didn't then this is a bug in the program and should be corrected.
When is this byte set? Maybe the bad chart caused the byte not to be set?

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

Should I install
Download OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Current Beta Release - 4.1.1317

The latest beta testing release is OpenCPN 4.1.1317, released 2016-01-17

Or most recent (today) compiled version?

Which one should we be using?

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

Dave,

Here are the results of a test that surprise me.

I Was try trying O411317 with a GPS in USB port. I created a first series connection with the port 4. "NMEA window" posted NMEA sentences. It's normal.

I wanted to edit this connection, bypassing the box "Remove connection" to make a TCP connection, I validated. I noticed that scrolling NMEA sentences provided by the GPS has not stopped.

It seems to me that this is not normal.

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

Dave,

I assume that you will soon release 4.2.
Plugins that should work are those on this page: Plugins for OpenCPN 4.1 | Official OpenCPN Homepage
But now at least some of them do not work with the current version 411317. I know that even some of them, like the Grib and NMSO Draw, have been changed.
It would have taken all the plugins that are re-compiled for consistent tests can be made in advance.

Best regards. Gilletarom.

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

In manually checking anchor watch, I expanded the circle beyond the alarm zone, the alarm stayed on. This may be because I used "move boat here" for boat movements.

Even if the boat is initially within the zone, the alarm still goes off.

OOOOOPPPPS I didn't have GPS on so I guess it's not supposed to work.

I see this too. A connection that is disabled (unchecked) is still producing data in the NMEA window. Data doesn't disappear unless the connection is deleted.

Discovered today when attempting to debug the 10% extra distance issue.

Dave,

Issues en route to Mayaguana.
*Alarm sounds does not work, incl. AIS & anchor watch.
(Luckily very few targets to consider , though.)

*I get a repeatable crash, but not as easy as in 4.1.1301 when loading a great amount of charts in single mode, chart group ALL, and changing between a number of charts.ddd dump below.

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

After removing OpenCPN and all plugins entirely, including my config, I reinstalled Opencpn 4.0, got my charts working by copying a cleaned up chart files list and chart groups to the opencpn.ini. Directed Chart Downloader to my paths (not standard). Then installed today's OpenCPN.

It seems to be working better, I think the old opencpn.ini and the programdata/opencpn files were getting messy. I am not turning on OpenGL for awhile.

Did-g if you want me to test something specific re opengl and texture cache, just let me know. From Options Display Advanced with opengl=0 I can click on Graphics Options and see the Texture settings. Texture Compression is unchecked. I can check and uncheck it. I cannot click on "Clear Texture Cache" which is ok.
(I assume if you uncheck "Texture Cache" the cache gets cleared anyway. If I check "Texture Cache" and close options, then reopen the check still remains...This is all with opengl=0.

When I turn on OpenGL the checks seem to work properly and I can clear the cache.
I am going to leave opengl off for the time being.

Probably should have removed and started over, awhile ago.

All...

re:

Anyone else having trouble with alarm sounds?

You may test easily by setting an anchor watch with GPS input disabled. Alarm should sound, independent of ownship position relative to anchor watch point. Thus the anchor watch function acts as a GPS validity alarm as well.

Turn on the GPS, move the watch point close to the ship, and the alarm should stop.

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

Bdbcat, Did-g & Gerhard,

After complete removal and reinstall, it works much better and faster. I think the opencpn.ini and programdata\opencpn\folders were pretty clunked up from testing. It opens much faster and pans and zooms are quite fast with no hesitation or black screens.

Did-g do you want me to try
NCPUCount=4 in your ini [Settings] section, and rebuild the cache
now?

Much better.
Thanks, sorry for causing troubles at this busy time.

Folks...

Debugging a recent error report...

Anyone seen anything like the attached pix?
Note the orange GPS/Compass window. This is Windows, with Intel 945GM graphics, OpenGL mode.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

U41 Lenovo, 14 inches, 8.1 W, 2600 X 1960 O 411 317.

See screen copy. For this test, in "Options / User", the cursor "Factor scale object" was to 5. Then, the buoy and Other kind of objects are big. This Is Good. Aim the boat is too big. Compare with the AIS targets and with buoy around it.

Best regards. Gilletarom.

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

Hi,

is this the right place to post reports about the current OpenCPN version 4.1.XXX?

I am contributor to OpenSeaMap and we recently started to pre-produce chart bundles of kap-charts from our online map for download and offline use.
These chart bundles work fine with OpenCPN 3.2 but we get reports about 'regularly' crashes with OpenCPN 4.1.XXX.

If this is the right place, please tell me how to proceed. The kap chart bundles can be found at:

KAP-charts from OpenSeaMap - OpenStreetMap Wiki

I do provide this link and do not post a single chart, because from the reports, it seems that the problem occurs when zooming and moving with the whole bundle loaded. In that situation several chart changes will occur in a short time...

I am far from sure, that it is not 'ultimately' caused by some error in our chart bundle. but I did find none yet. If you suppose such error in the kap file itself, please let me know.
Also if you do have any comprehensive description of the kap file format and its contents. Our knowledge is based primarily on that published by Tim Thornton.

Thanks to everyone who helped.
PS. If there are small things you want improved in your sections, I would go ahead and do it.

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

alexej-osm....

You have come to the right place.
Thanks for the bug reports and link. I will download a bundle and have a look.

OCPN 4.1.xxx has been in active Beta for a while, and is now very close to release. As for any Beta software, there have been crashes in OCPN 4.1.x. Most probably these crashes are unrelated to the OSM bundles.
The current Beta 4.1.1317 is pretty stable.

But we shall see.

Thanks for you interest and support of OpenCPN. More charts, please
