Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

@Blueship....

Can you post an example of a .KAP chart file that will not import into 4.1.1317?

Thanks
Dave

re:

I never see this kind of situation.

I see this is tested with custom version 4.1.1317 made by JP.

Is it the same behaviour with the 4.1.1317 posted as "official" Beta?

Thanks
Dave

I uninstall all my install (4.0 and and all bêta) this morning and clean the PC with CCLeaner.
Then I do not install O 4.0 but I install directly the version that Jean Pierre send to me, with the last version of grib plugin.
When this version run, it announce 4.1.1317 on the top of screen. I install also the S63 that you post for me. It run also Ok.
I download also the plugins compiled by RGleason and present on thingie under 4.1.1317. All these plugins are running fine.

That said ???? The is just a similar problem with the OCPN Draw. Some time, when I use this plugin, there is also crash.

I cannot said at what moment crash. It is !!!.

Some time, crash when I stop O with red cross.

Best regards. Gilletarom.

@Dave

I solved the problem concerning kap-files by a clean install from scratch. All kaps are now visible.

I can confirm that this happens sometimes. As Gilletarom, I can't find out exactly when and why.

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

I think we need a big note somewhere during the install process that states, that this is a major new version, and it requires
1. Setting Opengl=off Texture cache=off before startup.
2. Update of charts (suggested).
3. Then total rebuild of the chart database.
4. Then if opengl is useful, and texture cache is used "clear" it first.
5. Procede slowly using without OpenGL first.

Why, because there have been improvements made to opengl and texture cache which necessitate this.

Incidentally, I cannot load v4.1.1301 now, goes to a blank black screen with toolbar because I have OpenGL and texture cache on. I don't care about this, because I am testing 4.1.1317 now. However the point is that these versions are different and the chart db and texture caches need to be refreshed.

@Rick,
Is this for everybody who is (in a few days ?) upgrading from 4.0 to 4.2?

Rick...

I think that note would be a little extreme.

History has shown that your particular Windows system and OpenGL configuration is a bit unstable. Default driver changes magically, local builds don't always work first time, etc.

Maybe the problems are more widespread, but I think not.

Lets get a little more feedback on this. I believe a standard upgrade from O4 to O4.2 will be painless to most users, even with OpenGL textures active.

Aart,
I don't think so. Better wait what the developers have to say for this topic.

Maybe Operator error?

Hope you are right.

Erase your harddisc, install a new Windows or Linux, install Opencpn and everything is fine...

This is with quilting on and off it happens.

Charts come back after the rebuild.

No it's not.
What do you mean by 'rebuilding the database' the raster cache or the charts db?
If the former are you able to close (skip) the dialog box when rebuilding the cache ?

Is your CPU a 4 cores 8 threads? If yes could you try to with
NCPUCount=4 in your ini [Settings] section, and rebuild the cache?

Moreover, could you remove one duplicate rnc ST-RI directory in your charts list, followed by a force full rebuild? I think the logic is broken because you have the same charts both in duplicate ST-RI, in CG-01 and CG-05. You have duplicate entries in the db, same path, same filename, that's bad.

We should never need to make notes like this.

If the texture format changed and the magic byte didn't then this is a bug in the program and should be corrected.

Re: OpenCPN RC(2) 4.1.1317 Release

I have been doing to much testing of plugins and O and my config.ini and c:\programdata\opencpn file was not pretty. I have removed everything following Carcode's suggestion.

did-g:

If the former are you able to close (skip) the dialog box when rebuilding the cache ? I did eventually rebuild the raster (texture) cache -see below.
I let it finish rebuilding (8mb I think) and did not try to skip, although I have done so in the past, and let the cache be built up with use. Did not test "Skip" this time.

did-g,
By rebuilding the db I mean the Chart Database. I also turned off the texture cache, "cleared" it and turned off opengl. (Initially, to do this I had to edit the opencpn.ini and set opengl=0. Then opencpn started up and showed my charts, without the black screen, and it seemed to be working properly.

However I suspected the texture cache as the problem, because I did a check an turned opengl=1 by edit opencpn.ini again and loading opencpn cause a black screen again. Therefore I wanted to clear the texture cache and for some reason I had left the setting GPUTextureCompression=1
GPUTextureCompressionCaching=1
due to inexperience about what I needed to change in the ini.
Anyway at some point, while in Opencpn, somehow I got in to the Texture Cache setting and hit "Clear" even though OpenGL was NOT on.

Then I rebuilt the chart db once or twice, and used it without OpenGL. Then turned on OpenGL used it that way for awhile. Cleared the texture cache again before turning that on, and then it started working, after a long wait while the texture cache was built. It appeared to work fine.

Then I happened to try a previous version of OpenCPN 4.1.1108 and the screen went black and O stopped working. I could exit the program, but then Windows tries to fix it.

I then went back to my v4.1.1317 installation and it worked fine.

Yes, I have taken only part of dear Gerhard's suggestion to total rebuild my computer (in preferably Linux) - a 2 day process. I have removed all copies of Opencpn and the config fie and am rebuilding my config and chart files, chart groups and chart downloader.

In the process I have found the duplicate ST-RI in CG-01 and have removed it. I tried to put these in proper order when editing the opencpn.ini and found that O just reorders it according to some internal determination. --What happens if I take the numbers on the end off?

It is an Inspiron 17 XPS L502X with Intel Core i7-2720QM cpu @ 2.20 ghz 2nd gen Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 adapting processor speed for greater performance when needed. 4-way and 8-way multitask processing, Hyper-Threading Technology allows each processor core to work on two tasks at the same time. larger cache size deliver even greater responsiveness for the serious multitasker.
Cores=4 Threads=8 Processor Base Freq 2.2ghz Turbo 3.3ghz TDP 45w

I can try that after I get it set up again, may take a little while.

Thanks did-g.
